Why, we created pretty much zilch
Can't see where the goals are going to come from
Did you not watch any of last season?

They'll come from the exact same players that scored them last year. They're all still in the team.

Plus we did create chances, Eriksen had two good ones, Kane had another that he possibly should have passed as well as some individual plays from Chadli and Alderweireld that could have come off better.

The short sightedness of some is almost astounding.

Typical Bentaleb really. Not bashing the guy but he is always far to casual with his passing and its happened time and time again. When he gave that ball away, Pochettino turned away in disgust and headed back to the bench knowing what was next... a Man Utd goal! Bentaleb really needs to get the passing sorted, its awful he can't pass 15 yards still.

we were a pretty average 5th last season and at the moment have huge holes in our squad, we played without any imagination or attacking flair today and ended up playing players out of position
Why is that short signted

At least the first game of the season is over with and it wasn't a total gubbing. Now we can start properly and claim our rightful place in 5th in the last couple of weeks after an emotionally draining slog of a season. Take that 6th place team!

Having watched the preseason games and today's first league game I am quite optimistic for the season ahead. The back four has improved on last year which in itself will see us pick up or hold onto points.

I know the majority with media influence have been crying out about how we are going to score goals. Like a couple above I can see it will come from a number of players. We have played some decent stuff in and around the final third in the games to date and what is disappointing for me has been the final ball. Look at today's game - had Chadli, Dembele, Eriksen, Kane, and Walker all played better final balls we could have created more clear cut chances. We didn't see as much cutting edge football last season.

Step back for and take a look at the game - we went to Old Trafford to play some people's favourites, lost on an own goal, dominated for spells, limited their chances, their keeper was busier of the two and with a younger team starting to take shape doing what the manager wants. We deserved a draw and played better than we did when we beat them twice in three years.

What we really need is a leader in midfield - someone like Carrick or Schweinsteiger - who can add bite and experience and guide the players around him.

What we also need is to start scoring when we are on top, so we don't have to chase games. We beat Chelsea and Arsenal last year because we scored when on top. We need to do it on a more consistent basis and we can pick up the point that could prove crucial at the end of the year.

Well, quite. Not sure when going to OT and making them work for a narrow win on the opening day was considered a gimme. Plus, first game of the season. The season always starts properly, in my mind, after that game. Cobwebs have been blown away etc.

But then, don't mind me. I got lost on the way to SB apparently. Or something.

Can't possibly quote everyone on here referring to Townsend as an option so I'm just going to make this post as patronising as possible by typing the next bit with the CAPS lock on:

TOWNSEND IS INJURED. HE HAS A SHOULDER INJURY. HE WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION TODAY.

Today was frustrating but we looked much better than we did in the same fixture last season with largely the same team. Anyone suggesting there was a gulf between the two teams over 90 minutes must have been watching something else. Did we create enough? No. But we created more than they did. We defended better than they did. We had as much of the ball as they did and they've spent millions on their midfield while we fielded two kids. Unfortunately luck just wasn't on our side at the crucial moment and that happens in football. Next week it might work in our favour. If you're still feeling crap about today's game take a walk, treat yourself to a takeaway and a beer, and watch MOTD later feeling glad you ain't a Sunderland fan, because they're shit every week!

Football is back - be happy.
MOTD will be doctored to the extent only one team will be on the park, with red shirts on.

Fair
don't care p
Fair enough then.

Back to the match, wow. I forgot just how quickly we turn over our squad. Lots of new names in the squad. Fair amount of youngins too. This seems underwhelming but unlike the Bale swapsy for a gaggle of young blockbusters this might just be the winning combo given time. Weird how that can work out. I take it most aren't calling for Poch's head? Plus, a narrow loss at OT on the first day seems to indicate that we might not be Real Madrid circa ZZ and Raul etc but we're not crap either.
