For me personally, it’s a case of would I have start Winks? No. Can I understand reasons why Ryan Mason might have? Yes.

The Real Madrid game was in November 2017. May would still be PM for 18 months and Trump was finishing off his first year. Its a long time ago.

Of course, but in the time since our managers have tried to play him as a No. 6, which he was woefully ill-suited to, and in a hugely negative setup which also doesn’t make use of a possession-oriented player. He’s been a particularly poor fit for what Poch in his final 18 months was doing and for what Jose wanted to do for his entire duration at the club.

Ultimately I suspect he’s been picked because (1) Mason felt he could not play Ndombele given his performance against Saints and (2) Sissoko was the other option. All I’m saying is that he’s at least got it within him to be better than what we’ve seen, and Mason is giving him a huge chance to show it.
