I’d imagine we’d wait for the summer we know Davies and Emerson can do a job at Cb so not totally desperate.
Well he'd have his pick of clubs in the summer on a free so if Ange really likes him and we have squad space then why not get him for a cut price fee then we have 4 CB's under 25 and our future at CB is sorted. VDV and Kelly can also both cover LB at a pinch.

Then Emerson goes back to being back-up for Porro so Porro can actually get a rest occasionally before his hamstrings go too and Davies goes back to being back-up for Udogie and with 1 year left on Ben's deal we start to look for a young LB option to replace him the following summer.

This should be the plan imo, not relying on Davies and Emerson to cover CB, for a start Davies is now and injured and Emerson really isn't a CB.

Assuming Dragusin is done it would be great to get this one done this window if possible. Provides cover in two positions and would mean we have adequate cover (finally) across the back 4 knowing that Emerson can also cover RCB in an emergency.

If we look to sign Kelly this window, he would be well integrated into Ange's formation to contribute now plus hit the ground running next season along with the others.

Exactly, build from a position of strength for once.

The fact is we were after him last summer and he's now down to 6 months left. It's a long running interest and he should be available at a good price. We couldn't ask for a better back 4 than VdV, Romero, Dragusin and Kelly really. I really think we should try to push this through while the opportunity is there. It may be difficult to convince him though with 3 other quality centre backs when Dragusin arrives.

It's an interesting one.

Looking from both sides: if we buy now we get him for a low fee but not free. With our injuries this is an opportunity for him to get some game time and show what he can do. He also has 6 months to settle in, have a preseason and be fully integrated ready for next season. From Bournemouth's side they might prefer to get something rather than nothing for a player who isn't playing this season anyway.

We can wait out until the summer and get him for free but if we do that he might ask for a higher salary and a team offering him first team football might come in. Though the 2nd part I doubt. I'm confident we'll be his best offer.

Also you have to consider he can talk to non premier league clubs now so they would have a jump on us. Someone could already get a pre agreement done with him. I think given 3 of our centre backs are non homegrown a 4th one could really do with being homegrown. Either him or Tosin would make a lot of sense for us but now is the best chance to get it done.

If he is genuinely a top target and seen as important for the future but Bournemouth don't want to have to replace him in January - would it not be worthwhile purchasing him for a reduced fee now (rather than face competition and all it entails in the summer) and loan him back for the rest of the season?

True, but does he have the reputation of a player that a big side abroad would make him a player of interest?

I think his best offers will likely come from Prem sides.

Might have to be careful about number of loans etc. - but that's said without any immediate counting by me of how many loans out we have (nor how many we're allowed!)

The Italians love an English centre half

See links with Tanganga plus Chalobah, Tomori etc

What's he worth to Bournemouth?
Big injury list but 10 points clear of relegation, maybe they take the cash now.

That would make no sense if he's free in the summer. The only point to spend money on him is so we get him in now.

Of course if we could guarantee that he would come to us on that free transfer i'd agree.

If we got Kelly now I think our CB room would be sorted for the next few years. I think RB/LB would be mostly sorted (definitely until Summer). I could see us waiting until Summer to reassess but I wouldn't be surprised if we moved for him near the end of the window due to him being HG and depending on Davies injury.

I honestly am shocked how quickly our defense was overhauled.
We lost to Arsen*l this time last year with a back 5 of:
Doherty - Romero - Dier - Lenglet - Sessegnon
