Does he rank as one of the two you'd pick as Spurs best ever strikers?

Would it be Sherringham - Linekar?
Lineker. Common error.

It's hard to judge how players from that era would fit in the modern game. He lacked an aerial presence, by his own admission didn't like heading the ball. Yet still scored shed loads.

He was a master poacher and actually a good all round striker, aerial threat aside. One of the best we've had in my lifetime. But even the likes of Berbatov, was far more skilful. (On a slight digression, Robbie Keane of old would be my choice of players past, who would suit the moden game).

Not sure if that helps. Would I have the Lineker of old in the current team? Most definitely. Would I choose him over certain other strikers, given a time machine and pinch of salt? Possibly not.

Yeah the era comparison is always difficult. Players are far better athletes for example.

My favourite pairing since I've supported spurs would be Kane - Berbatov .. not taking into consideration their whole body of work. Just them both at their peak

Like Gazza my memories of Lineker are blurry, I was just shy of 7 when he left us, and many built around my fathers old VHSs. I don’t like the penalty box striker term for him because he was actually so much more and that phrase conjures imagery of someone who scored only tap ins. You don’t score that many with just tap ins.

He actually scored a fair few with his head despite his reputation for not liking headers, he’ had the skill and touch to round a keeper, he could score with either foot, hit a volley and had great composure. His pace also meant he could match on to a ball in behind. Lineker was also willing to put his body on the line to score goals that he had no right to get to that under/over hit pass or cross, and he could carry the ball into the area too. The reason he scored so many from near the goal was his amazing movement and his composure amidst the chaos.

I actually think that while he didn’t overly do the back to goal stuff, in terms of his goalscoring abilities he had a fair bit in common with Kane. But I think most top strikers have most scoring strings to their bows so therefore will have a fair bit in common in terms of their variety of goals.

Good video here, my favourite is just after 11m because of his involvement in the build up to his own goal:

No, crisps.

I'm guessing you're either pretty young, overseas, new to Spurs, or on the wind up.

Lineker is arguably one of the most famous CF's to play the game.

And yes... definitely not a yid. You won't see him attending legends games etc...

Well, I'm 28, Australian, and only half on the wind up. I've heard of him of course, but not being English limits my knowledge base for the older players

No doubt.

I'm glad you can admit Viduka was a better footballer than Linekar

Well you need to sort that out, because if you know your history, it’s enough to make your heart go…..
