I agree, but at the same time isn't it just deflection from Klopp making out Pool are in comparison the paupers from down the road who don't have a pot to piss in. His comments were certainly not xenophobic, but it's just smoke and mirrors from both sides.
Relatively speaking (when compared to those 3 clubs) he's right.

Its fine if the established bigger clubs outspend everyone else three fold.
When someone else is doing it its just not fair. How are they supposed to compete???
The hypocrisy is hilarious.

It is smoke and mirrors although I would say that sympathy probably lies more with Klopp unless you happen to be a fan of one of the clubs that he mentioned. I feel more annoyed with City for deflecting in that way because I think that racism/xenophobia is easily undermined when accusations are flung about in such a manner.

If they can get the media to start labeling negative comments about their ownership as xenophobic then soon enough no-one will be able to critique the regimes running these clubs without being a big fat racist. Sportswashing? Completed it, mate.
Agreed, absolutely ridiculous the poor sensitive owners of Man City can get offended so easily about the truth of their financial advantage over their rivals...

Obviously, although his complaining about spend only comes up when playing these clubs. Doesn't seem to bring it up when he's playing say Brentford or Bournemouth. I think we are applying more sympathy to Klopp due to where the money has come from as opposed to how much money we are talking about. I mean when you are breaking financial records signing goal keepers, and defenders can you really complain about how fair things are? Is his spend over the last few years, too different to City's?

One thing you can never deny about Klopp is that he's a very sore loser.

Klopp can be incredibly annoying with this constant whinging when things go against him, but to be fair to him in this instance, he was asked a direct question in the pre match press conference about how Liverpool can keep up with Man City, to which he gave an undeniably factual answer. Not sure why he should be criticised for telling the truth.

I suppose you could argue that Liverpool have earned their position at the top of the financial tree through decades of nurturing a global fan base through on field success. The other 3 haven't

Liverpool have been more in the realm of Wolves, Everton and Fulham in net spend over the last 5 years, so while yes there are of course levels where they spend a lot more than some other clubs, it's fair to say he has had financial limitations.

Obviously Van Dijk and Allison were huge signings but they were also big risks in fairness, who knows what things would look like for Liverpool if they'd turned out shite. City have dropped at least £40-50m on a CB every year including Mangala and Ake at £40m (lol) and Stones at £50m. There is no risk to the way they operate, as there will always be money to correct poor signings.

He's an arsehole, but he's not wrong.

I'm not really making a case on the financial argument. My annoyance was literally over the misplaced xenophobia accusation.

It's always misleading looking at transfer fees as a guide to financial limitations. There are too many instances of players running down their contract in order to get higher wages over transfer fees. Along with crazy buy-out clauses like Haarland. If you look at that as transfer fee then he's a bargain at £50m but once you add on all of the supposed agent fees and bonuses the common belief is that it was closer to £200m.

I don't know how reliable Marca are on this kind of thing but it's crazy to see just how far behind the rest of the big 6 we are on the wages side (and I'd be surprised if that includes the new bumper deals for Nunez & Salah). If Klopp wants to look at financial limitations maybe he should look a little closer to home too:

What are the wage bills of the top Premier League clubs?

  1. Manchester City - £355m
  2. Chelsea - £343m
  3. Manchester United - £323m
  4. Liverpool - £314m
  5. Arsenal - £244m
  6. Tottenham Hotspur - £205m

Man Ciry don’t want negative PR. When was the last time we saw an article about their financial doping? They seemingly shut everything down

Someone (I can't remember who) on one of the big football podcasts recently said that lots of journalists are worried about getting taken to court if they criticise certain owners.

Seen a few Liverpool fans saying players like van dijk are only turning it on this season when they fancy it. World Cup innit.
