The previous regime fucked up the finances so bad that Messi literally has to leave.

The salary cap (and other new implementations starting this season) in La Liga is a real issue for the big clubs it seems.

Genuinely thought Messi would retire at Barca. The last true one club man. Regardless of their success, I just didn't and couldn't imagine him anywhere else.

Barcelona's transfer strategy over the last few seasons has been diabolical and they've only got themselves to blame.

Imagine how bad you have to fuck things up to dethrone Barca as the pinnacle of European, possibly world, football, run up absurd debt and lose football's top two icons.

Have to say, as a general football fan, a part of me is sad we didn't get to see him in the PL in his peak years.

Messi is 34, been at Barcelona since 16. He has made a mint out of them. So why not stay on a reduced package, and seal his legacy?
Moving now, given their turmoil, is pretty shocking.

He did agree a reduced salary (50% pay cut), the finances are so bad that it wouldn't have made a difference.

Barca still need to sell first team players and reduce the wage bill. They still haven't registered the signings for the new first team squad yet because its so bad.

I’m sad to see what Barcelona has become. This is the club that until recently refused to play with a shirt sponsor, and when they did finally go that way, did so for free with UNICEF.

They sold out, tried to do things the same way as Franco’s club without knowing how, and it’s all blown up.
