stats this, stats that, yatta yatta, what we really need to know is this. Is he scapegoat material? How suited is he to the match thread vitriol he'll be subjected to after 20 minutes without a goal. Is there a perceived flaw in his game, it doesn't have to be a real one, just something, anything, that people can latch onto as a focus for slagging him off. You know, Like Dele's 'flicks'

If there's potential for a spot of that then I say we bring him in. Can't have too many scapegoats.

I think I read somewhere that he is mean to old ladies and kids.
Hope that helps

What we need is a target man. Someone who can win headers, compete physically and hold the ball up. Son, Moura and Dele then have a focal point to play off and their goal output will increase. If the target man can also score goals then that is an added bonus. But target men who can dominate physically, link play and score goals cost quite a lot of money. More than £30M anyway.

a few have said he’s not really a “hold the ball up” kinda striker, more a fox in the box

Hold up striker? Why did so many think that it's still the 90s? There are a number of other ways to play football, not least when you have a midfield full of skillful dribblers and passers.

Can we replace Jose with this guy? Seems to know much more about football than Jose does. :cautious:

Agree, if we get a DM and a quick striker who will play off the last man (to push the defence back giving the midfield more space) and stay in and around the box! I think it would work also.

Playing a target man just means the defenders will launch the ball long and then look for son or moura to pick off the knock-downs.

A hold up striker doesn't refer to a big lump up front just there for his physical attributes - it's players like Firmino and Kane who have the ability to make space and bring other players into play with skill and, vision and passing ability - combined with their physicality and finishing capabilities.

Of course those two are elite players and we wouldn't be signing someone of that calibre as back up, but you'd like to think we could find 'cheaper' versions with similar traits...

So many ‘think’ this for the following reasons...

1. Mourinho says he needs / wants a target man.
2. Our style of play the last 2 months has been direct, long balls.
3. Son and Moura have looked crap without a player to ‘play off’ in this system.

Now I’m not saying we should play long / direct, but that seems to be our managers’ plan A and plan B. So maybe we need to buy a target man who can win headers and link play. If we buy a ‘fox in the box’ and launch it I think we’ll get the same results.

I get where your coming from here but, as I’ve seen others mention, I believe Jose’s been forced into that choice due to the options he’s had at disposal in midfield. Personally think his actual plan A is for the midfield to carry the ball forward through incisive dribbling. Signing Gedson who’s game revolves around this would suggest it too and I think we saw it more against Norwich too through Lo Celso.

Has Mourinho said target man? He said he wants a CF. Target Man is someone you lump the ball to. CF is, you know someone who lives in the box to score goals. There is a subtle difference. Depends what Jose agenda you are applying at the time I suppose.

Can't really see the point in comparing him with Kane, if his stats were comparable with H's he'd be a lot nearer the 150m Harry is worth rather than the 30m we are perhaps looking at paying.
The stats I'm using are not exactly what Kane excels at. But as I mentioned are around average in the PL for strikers.

I compared to Kane because that's a player we have and understand but the way I was using the stats were not to say he is worse then Kane but rather to show his style

Wow - so I have a ‘Jose agenda’ for pointing out simple facts? You sir, are a delight.

“Jose: Spurs are missing a target man:”

Target man is just a general expression for a centre forward. Nothing to do with the style.
