I don't think it's a case of this guy or Tanganga.

Foyth has left (albeit on loan but it looks unlikely he'll be back), and Toby is realistically potentially in his last season for us.

That leaves us with Dier, Sanchez, and Tanganga. Certainly room in the squad for two more CBs by the end of the season.

This looks like smart forward planning, to me.
I also believe Rodon is replacement for Jan, a CB who uses his left foot predominantly.

He's two years younger than Jan and has looked a bit past his prime for about two years. Hopefully it's just form (the whole squad was underperforming for a while) or the midfield not doing its job (lack of a CDM / balanced CM pairing).
Don't get me wrong, I still think he's a good player, but I considered him and Jan the best CB pairing in world football for a while. My concern is that if he is slightly past his peak at 31, he's going to be well past it at 34.

Yeah I agree he's declining, I don't think he'll be leaving though.

I don't think it's hard at all. Toby has regressed a great deal and for some unbeknown reason gets a pass all to often. He can hit a diagonal ball better than most but when it comes down to pure defending headers tackles interceptions blocks recovery pace Sanchez out performs him. The issue with Sanchez is that people remember his mistakes which are generally misplaced passes he has to work on that, when played with a footballing centre back the balance is good.

Watch the Sheffield game last year after lockdown 3 goals conceded Sanchez in no mans land for all 3. His positioning is poor and he makes up for it with pace. Once he adds composure and positioning to his game which he will as he's still young he will be world class but if you take the physical aspects out of it and look at out and out defensive ability Toby is an absolute rolls Royce defender and currently a big step above Sanchez.... that will change but its a long way off yet.

Sorry but the Sheffield utd result was a shit show from the whole team including Dier, Davies and Aurier all equally to blame.

Doesn't change that sanchez was in the wrong place for all 3.
Usually when defenders are caught out of position its because someone has given the ball away in midfield or someone hasn't tracked their runner. I Distinctly remember one of the goals where Sissoko doesn't track the runner into the box which lead to sanchez being pulled out of position, so again it's a team game and when the whole team plays shit it's very easy to point the finger at the last line of defense.

Shame this seems to have gone a bit quiet for the time-being, I was fully prepared for the Joe Rodon experience

It's all situational though isn't it? He was in the wrong place due to other team members being out of position or not tracking their runners.
Defending is as you said a team game and as a CB and GK you are the most exposed players to others mistakes. Our DF has an in possession shape and out of possession shape and the transition between the two can go wrong if a player gives the ball away unexpectedly. He does suffer with lapses like any young defender but he has a lot of positive attributes.

I wouldn't judge anyone on last season.

Everything I’ve watched of him suggests Rodon is right-footed. Can play both sides comfortably though, which is far more important. Vidic, Van Dijk and Ramos are probably the standout left-sided centre-backs of the past decade. All right footed.

Issue with this one atm not financial. Other names also being mentioned so we will have to see. Looks like we definitely want one in before window closes so it's a wait and see.

This was from last night.

At a guess, does that point to either another team is interested in him (Man Utd panic buying, cos they failed all window), or a fitness issue.. To be fair, he’d probably get more playing time at Utd as he’d probably go straight in to the team. I’m not sure that would be a good thing for him at the moment though. On the flip side, he may feel he can thrive in that situation and really make a name for himself?

Cheers Trix.

I’d imagine that if he’s a good as he’s being described as, he’ll have offers which provide quicker routes to the first team and he’ll want to start at the euros next summer.

Presumably it's something to do with his injury record then or maybe he wants a guarantee he'll get playing time and not be another Foyth.

Interesting that we're so keen to bring in a young CB. Since we already have 4 including a young prospect in Tanganga it's a bit of a weird one...

You'd think we'd either spend big on a guaranteed first teamer like Skriniar or save our money to buy one later. To be chasing a cheaper, younger option implies that either Jose really doesn't rate out CB options at all and thinks we needs more than 1, or we rate the likes of Rodon highly enough that we think they could break straight into the first team.

More likely internal politics in Swansea, the club seems to be in a bit of turmoil so I can imagine there may be a high level of disagreement among the decision makers.
