Well it's time to ramp up the search for another CB.

Because having Sanchez and Tanganga as part of the '6', is knowhere near good enough for a title challenging squad.

Even more so with the 5 sub rule.

He's a funny one, Rodon, isn't he? Seems to play pretty well for Wales whenever I've seen him, and I haven't heard anyone with a bad word to say about him as a person/character. Yet that's three managers in a row who have been loathe to actually play him. And now the best offer he has on the table is a season-long loan at Rennes? There's obviously something "wrong with the picture" that I'm not seeing...

He’s kind of been shrouded in mystery since even before we signed him. There was the mysterious hold-up in the deal which I don’t believe was ever clarified/verified which sounded like it was a personal issue (I believe I joked at the time that maybe he killed a man). It’s kind of just continued since he’s been here - plays fine, never gets a chance otherwise, managers like him, but he doesn’t play. It’s all been weird.

Wasn't it @agrdavidsfan that had some inside info on Rodon?

We've never used more than 5 cbs. The 6th one has only ever been emergency use (hence Rodon not getting a look in)
In that context Tangangas quality is basically irrelevant. Sanchez, sure.

No we haven't used more than 5 CBs. But alot has been talked about regards Conte and 2 for each position. I think he may have been quoted on that.

And the 5 sub rule.

People on here are obsessed, and have been for years and years, wayyyyyyy before Conte, by the 2 in each position thing, and it has pretty much never been borne out by practical reality.

It's almost always more true to how the squad operates to look at having 3 options per position (eg Son is a first string player but is also second option at CF) than 2 'specialists'.

Usually thats ended up being covered by a first team of 18-19 outfielders, though we tend to start the season with 20-22 and a couple invariably just get frozen out. This is very relevant to Rodon being loaned out because despite his quality, Sanchez was played in any of the three CB places ahead of him.

Take the point that 5 subs probably means a slightly larger rotation can operate.

So how many CBs (irrelevant of style or side) do you think we need going into this season?

Since when is Sanchez not good enough to be Romeros backup?

Load of Italian media linking us to Nikola Milenković. Yet to be mentioned by ITK or English media though
I always thought he was a bit slow and lumbering but I think he’d be pretty good as the middle man in a 3. He’s really strong, good in the air, reads the game pretty well and is a good passer. I think he’d get exposed in a 2 man defence in England.

Seen it only in the 'Lo Celso to Fiorentina' rumours but yeah it's on the SC front page now.

That is an interesting link (no thread for it) as it seems like a very doable deal if we went after it, plus he's from Serie A so surely Paratici is well aware of him and his transfer situation. Plus, like IOMLS said, perfectly suited for the CCB position behind Dier.

You really think he’s “deadwood”?
I suspect you, like me, feel that's too detrimental a term for him as he is not a bad defender so I'd prefer a kinder term but it sort of isn't far wrong as, due to different coaches decisions, he's made no contribution to the club since he's been here, he's not had the chance.

I tell you what, I’d like us to sign a defender who can defend an f-ing corner. Just that really.
