Doesn’t seem likely. Leicester seemingly prefer to sell Tielemans, and we now seem to be look at Zaniolo, feel like a lot needs to change for it to happen

There's confidence and then there's what they are doing, some are even unironically talking about a title challenge! My brother in law is a realistic gooner and he can't see them getting top 4 this year due to the strength of us and Chelsea, but he likes to go against the grain.

For me the gap between the two teams at the end of the season was much greater than 2 points. I'd say the GD of +29 vs +13 is a better metric.

We had a massively transitional season, changing managers mid season with the club in a two year malaise. Arteta is well established there and had the massive advantage of no european football on top of a well timed winter break (Covid). We've got a far superior manager that has now established his system, two elite attackers in their prime and arguably our best ever PL squad in terms of depth. I've never been more convinced of our superiority over them. We finished much stronger than them (and Chelsea) and IMHO we have more room for growth than both of them, despite their youthful squad. We now get a full season of Conte - following his first preseason and a strong transfer window - with a committed Kane. That is quite the prospect.

You can never rule them lot out as they are a jammy club, but it's now been six years outside of the CL and I'm not convinced they'll end that streak this year with Chelsea spending mega money and Utd having a fresh start under Ten Hag. All for them being excited and hopeful but I think they aren't truly paying attention to what is going on around them.

Personally I'd suggest them thinking all they have to do for top 4 is to overturn a 2 point deficit to us would be a bigger fallacy than us ignoring it. I think they've signed well in the circumstances and they'll win plenty of games, but the schedule will catch up with them and they will drop a lot of points as a result.
A great response to my post, one that I cannot fault. ?

I don’t get why Leicester have to sell to buy though?

Surely in worse case scenario they’d just be better off not signing anyone and keeping a proven class player like Maddison?

I thought Rodgers was supposed to be a decent tactician and he’s been able to buy plenty of players since he’s been there that he should be moulding into a decent team?

That’s not the point. They’ve got a crazy number of players going into the last year of their contract, plus Maddison only has two years left. If they just stay where they are then (a) all of their competitors are upgrading significantly and (b) half their squad can bugger off for free next year. And unless they can tie Maddison down to another contract - which seems very unlikely under the circumstances - then he’ll either go for a budget price or hang around for a year and go for nothing.

Great post.

I've noticed a lot of gooners used that Argument against Conte: "Spurs were only 2 points behind us when he took over" but as you say it really doesn't tell the whole story.

1. We had a goal difference of -7 to Arsenals -1 when he came in
2. We had European distractions when Arsenal had none
3. Conte had to instil all of his ideas mid-season
4. We were very lucky to even be on 15 points under Nuno given how awful some of the performances were.
5. Conte had none of his own signings until late January.

Since Conte took over the goal difference swing was +36 to us and +14 to Arsenal, despite them having no Europe and getting knocked out of the FA cup in the 3rd round. That's absolutely huge.

Their best bet is to sell Maddison (to us obviously), get Tielemans signed on a new contract and throw in Winks into our deal for good measure

This is wishful thinking at best. Leicester have about another 10 players besides YT who are in the last year of their contracts, a list that includes Vardy and Schmichel. This summer is crucial for them to make the right decisions on who to keep and who to sell in order to set their long term strategy.

Tielemans, as we all know, is a matter of when and not if. Throw in a couple other players that are excess to requirements, then you're looking a at least 40 if not 50M* (combined total) from player sales alone. This makes them extremely unlikely to sell Maddison.

The only way I see this happening, and I believe the club sees as well, is that if Leicester fail to shift their non-priority/soon to be out of contract players as expected by the end of the window AND are in need of funds for incomings.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but this one is a last minute deal if at all.

NOTE: *assuming an average of 10M for each player they sell aside from YT. Say Soyuncu for 10 and another 2 for 8 or 12M each

Yeah I thought we'd get 4th comfortably from where we were when he came in, mainly due to Conte being levels above OGS and Arteta. I think it shows how truly broken the squad was (physically and mentally) that it took as long as it did for him to really get us cooking. It didn't properly click until around March time. I'm ridiculously excited for next season all things considered.

I imagine that's what Leicester imagined but it may not work out for them
It may be a choice of getting 50 mil from selling them in consecutive seasons to 80 mil selling them in one window. That’s a lot of cash. Smart thing would be to sell both and start the rebuild now. Good thing is if both leave they wokld be desperate for CM. Say hello winksy! Think this is how it would play out.

Well the other way that it might happen is that Maddison makes it 100% clear that he's not going to sign a new contract

At the moment the window shuts his value drops by 10-15m

They would be foolish to let him run it down like the others. Even more so if he says he wants to go now of course as they'd have an unhappy player on top

I am sure he is ambitious and won't want to be treading water mid table

Even if it means we free up more cash for a top class central defender? I've never been all that impressed with Maddison.
What CB? Because who is there we can get who will come that is truly top class? Outside of Torres who I’m not a massive fan of I can’t see who we can get in for the lcb slot. Gvardiol is not available, bastoni won’t be sold…

Plus neither was I, until last season where he was incredible. Which coincided with the birth of his first child and him properly knuckling down.

I'm probably going to get a lot of negatives for this, but I don't want this first class knob anywhere near our club.
There is no doubt on his day he's a very good player, but in the past he has rubbished our club and players and at times wished we would get battered.
Yes he was younger, but he wasn't a 15 year old, he was an adult. A couple of examples "Wiltshire is 10 times the player than Dembele " and when he was ar Norwich "I would never sign for Tottenham my friends would disown me " and finally as recent as last season, " hope Arsenal get 4th, they deserve it more than Spurs"
Basically if he signs for us he is a hypocrite and would be purely for the money. There are certain players that have certain characters that despite how good they are I wouldn't want at my club, but I won't list them here cos I don't want to create a fire storm of disagreement

So you're telling me there's a chance ?. Jokes aside. He definitely seems an arsenal fan lol
