I agree to a certain extent with most of that, but i think we will not be able to really judge AVB until the end of next season, he has worked well with the players he has and i hope that in the summer he will ( having had a season with the squad) know where he has to improve and strengthen.

I honestly believe we will become a far better team under AVB then Redknapp.

Yeah I agree and said pretty much the same thing in a later post. For me it's about how we set up in August, AVB will have a proper summer for scouting, he'll know how Levy works as well so hopefully his targets will be more realistic than those rumoured last year when he came on. I'm already looking forward to next season to be honest, regardless of where we finish this year.

I know what you mean, i think this summer Levy will give AVB the players he needs because i think he see's in AVB a manger who will carry us to success.

Speaking of players moving on. We had KPB during 2008, wonder what would have happened if we kept him. He probably wouldn't have developed into the same player he is now, but if he had...

I hope you are right, if AVB can stop Levy buying players that don't fit the team style but are cheap then the first hurdle will be cleared..

My reasoning ( hope ) is that Levy see's in AVB a manager who will look to establishing a long term successful team, and this will help Levy get the sponsorship for the stadium easier if we succeed. One of the main reasons he sacked Redknapp was because he could see no long term plan and with AVB he can.

But I'm not sure that's really true considering he offered Redknapp a new contract...

Wasn't necessarily talking about last season, he had already signed a contract extension in 2010.

I think the outcome of the fella who met AVB and Friedel on the plane to Portugal sheds a bit of light on how Joe Lewis is a bit more involved than we all think.

I guess we will really never know, but whatever happened it was for the best.

Thought I'd post this here - I originally posted it in TTCowan's (memorable ) car crash of a season thread, addressing the point of how negatively trying in the Europa has affected us, as it also suggests that if AVB can steer us into the top 4 this season it will be the first time a Spurs manager has treated European competition seriously and finished in the top. Surely that is evidence of improvement:

What occurred to me this morning was this:

2009 - 2010 season: No CL, finished 4th.
2010 - 2011 season: CL, finished 5th.
2011 - 2012 season: No CL, finished 4th.

Kinda hammers home to me the need for this present squad to learn how to cope with competing on both fronts at once - it is hardly worth qualifying for CL if we are going to be excluded the following year because we couldn't cope with the work-load. At the same time, it suggests that it is not the playing in the Europa that gives us difficulties in finishing league position, but the taking European competition (whatever competition) seriously.
Having said that, I am still hoping that the pattern will be broken this year with another top 4 finish - which would be more evidence that AVB is advancing the club (i.e. showing that he can cope with European football and finish in the top 4 in the same season).

That and we need a bigger squad and/or the youngsters have to be trusted a bit more (or we needyoungsters who are ready to do a bit in the Premiership). I think most clubs struggle to compete on both fronts, even the likes of Dortmund and City for example. Has Arsenal's improvement in form also not coincided with their exit from the champions league?

Sandro Modric
Lennon Van der Vaart Bale

Just imagine.

That would have been awesome. Still nearly doable if we sign 2 players in summer - Moutinho and a striker. I think in fact that we could put together a better team than that with the right signings.

That could quite easily been our team at the beginning of this season (apart from Ledley retiring). All we had to do was keep hold of Modric and VDV and Berbatov would've come back if Levy wanted him :(
