Giving youth a chance?

So, new regime, everyone gets a clean slate. The youngsters will undoubtedly be wondering whether AVB will be the sort of Head Coach who will give them a chance to shine...

The reason for this post, was this compilation video of Soulman Corblimey:

He looks really bloody good! (don't we all on a couple of minutes of YouTube video, I know) But could he be worth a little shout as a 4th striker option. Everyone's banging on about Kane, but Coulbilaly could be worth a chance too. Maybe a loan spell this season at a lower level.

Feel free to use this thread for discussion of the future chances of all of our young players too.

I don't think much will change at youth/development level, like those breaking through will still get the same opportunities as they would have under Harry, I think that's mainly why Sherwood was kept on. Probably the only real change I can think of would be fewer of them out on loan, Redknapp much favored loans to reserve team football, but I don't think AVB will go that way, as very few managers do these days unless they're looking to sell.

More may get a chance though!?

And I'm willing to bet we will never, ever have two goalkeepers on the subs bench again!

Time will tell I suppose, but to be fair, if we take the Europa League seriously I can't see that too many will get a chance in the first team, simply as you'd have to be a phenomenal player to displace a seasoned pro from youth. But yeah, I'd rather a kid than a second goalkeeper on the bench, that was an baffling decision from 'Arry.

Rather Harry Kane get a proper chance than Coulibaly at this stage. Windy (watches a lot) of the youth team says he's a bit of a Defoe type player. Shift and shoot as soon as you get the ball. Loan out Coulibaly for a year and see how he does first.

Coulibaly is still only 17 yo I believe, so I do not think we'll see him in any competitive matches this season for Spurs. but, he must be in the plans for the club, surely. Caulker and Naughton should be brought into the first team fold methinks. Button as 3rd keeper maybe? :cautious:

I also think that's Falque in and GDS out, based on nothing but my opinion... Sounds like Kane will get a look in this summer, but I haven't see him play much.

we'll see.... ;)

There is no point of having a high level academy if the players that come through are never given the chance to play with the first team and are instead sent on loans all over the place and eventually forgotten, while the club is spending millions to buy players for positions these very youngsters were trained for. One needs to look no further than Barca to see how beneficial that is on so many level.

It's better if the kids get eased into the first team, rather than just chucking them altogether into a mis-matched team with the fringe players that the manager no longer wants. All things considering I thought our youngsters performed admirably in the Europa last season.

If AVB rotates cleverly we can have strong line ups, rest some, and give youth a chance in the Europa/Carling Cup still.

Coulilbaly looks really sharp! He's an exciting prospect for sure. He's got more about himself in the box than Harry Kane anyway... IMO.

That used to annoy me so much, we have a bunch of young player on our books and he used to pick 2 GKs on the bench, it maybe the most frustrating thing from the whole Redknapp era.

Looking forward to seeing Kane and Caulker get some opportunities.

It will be interesting to see how AVB uses Carroll, Livermore and some of the other players coming through. Coulibaly looks promising but I reckon it's still too early for him.

It is clear AVB has been brought in to create a future at the club similar to that of Arsenal now. Create a young team and bring youth through the ranks. The brave new world of title talk is to change the mentality of the club into a winning one. If all goes to plan we will have the opportunity for a period of lasting success, down the line a little.

If you aim to win the tile, you might get Champions League, aim for Champions League and you may get the Europa League.

I like the guys attitude and positive mental approach. Youth is clearly our future, for now it's purchasing youth, exciting times.

I think they will and a reason why we may be able to offer larger wages. Laudrup mentioned something similar when joining Swansea in that he was hoping to have a squad of 18 players to work with. If we followed suit it would allow us to have 18 players mixed with 7 younger players on smaller wages. Therefore we could in theory offer larger wages to those 18.

I do hope AVB uses players coming out of the academy. For all Harry's faults, he did include a lot of youngsters in the Europa League, and had faith in Livermore. He also rated Caulker. Ironically, it was the established professionals who were not in the core 15 or so that Harry was reticent to use.

Naturally, AVB will initially rely on the opinions of the coaches currently at the club, but in time I hope he sees the potential in the likes of Kane, Townsend, Luongo, Parratt, Miles perhaps.

While they might become 'stars' they should be the kind of players filling out the squad and giving emergency options, rather than high wage internationals who will only become unsettled at a lack of game time. One exmaple might be the GK position - what was the point of having 3 established keepers (and Alnwick) when we have a good, English prospect in Button? I know he has been out on loan a lot but two oldies and an outcast in front of him? not good squad management in my opinion.

I think Coulibaly should have one more year in the youth set up and then be loaned out when he's 18/19. He really is the only youth player we have that looks like he could play at a high level. Harry Kane will never be more than a fraizer campbell level player. Championship/Low Premier League at best.

This.
The difference between him and Kane, for whoever was comparing, is that Kane has already been out on loan to a lower league club. He's ticked that box (as Sherwood says), now he either has to step up with us, or go out on loan with a Prem club, and then step up with us. It is no good saying he isn't good enough. We can't afford to have a shed full of players in their early twenties who have been out to lower league clubs and showed they can cut it, but never ever make the step up - it just costs us money to eventually get rid of players we should have done 3 seasons earlier.

Coulibaly may be ready for a loan this year, or, more likely the next.

What I would like to draw attention to is something I comented on from the NextGen. What impressed me about him wasn't goalscoring, it was the way he seems to be licking up on holding the ball up and bringing others into play. The first coupls of clips from this vid showing him doing this, before settling down to his remarkable facility for finding the net. I would think he is being isntructed in this part of the game and itis evidence that Sherwood was doing a decent job last.

I've always been massively impressed with the space he manages to find himself in. He runs the channels between centre back and full back like a seasoned veteran sometimes. Still, it is his finishing that is a joy to behold, either foot and inside or outside the box.

Yep.
Ultimately, a striker is judged on his finishing (which looks exceptional).
Otherwise Crouchinho would be remembered as one of the greatest strikers ever...
