Giving youth a chance?

I suspect the club will keep some of the non-English youngsters at the club rather than loaning them out very early on in their Spurs career.

A key reason for this is the "Home Grown" rule and UEFA A and B lists. Last time I looked the tedious thing up, for the B list a young player (essentially u21) had to have a 2 year uninterrupted spell at the club to be eligible for the B list. Ie as an extra youngster beyond the 25-man A list squad - a rule which Tom Carroll benefitted from last season.

So, young players like Luongo, Veljkovic, Coulibaly and Gomelt will need 2 years uninterrupted at the club before being loaned out to ensure they count as "extra" players for the Europa League.

Also, players signed when they're very young have a chance of becoming "Home Grown", just as Fabregas counted as "Home Grown" for the scum because Arsewipe had, ahem, procured him so young.

A lot of youngsters have come through during Harry's tenure :-
- O'Hara made it and moved on
- Kyle Walker
- Jake Livermore
- Townsend
- Danny Rose
- Steven Caulker
- Harry Kane
- Carroll (is he injured)

They were loaned out to good clubs , got opportunities and gave a good account of themselves .

Caulker and Walker clearly have a future at the club . Be interesting to see whether AVB thinks the others do and is prepared to play them in the leaugue .

'Arry wasn't entirely anti-youth. I think some folk do over-emphasise that.
What I would hope, with AVB, is that he will be introducing a few into the squad and rotating with a bit more consistency, it looks like that might be the intention with Harry Kane, and, who knows, maybe unearthing a real jem.

I have no idea what is going on with Carroll...maybe SpursIdol does (y)

One of those is a first team regular, and two are squad players (Livermore and Rose)

The rest have barely played in any games which mattered to Harry (Europa only).

And Caulker has played on loan. Never ever played for Harry. He could take very little credit for him!

I'm not sure how much we'll see of the youngsters this year - Lukaku wasn't used much at Chelsea while AVB was there and he payed a lot of money for him. Then again if they are ready he will probably give them a chance as he seems the kind of manager who will select the players he think will contribute the most to the team regardless of age.

One thing I don't get is how people can write off Kane. I think he's quite like Andy Carrol was during his early years at Newcastle and look how much he was sold for in the end. Give him a few years and he could be some player - or he might end up like Carrol.

Ain't that, like, an oxymoron?

Excellent in NextGen Series. Bossed the midfield with no problem. has apparently boundless energy to chase and harry opponents, ability to spot and make a pass, tackle, good running off the ball and great awareness of where others are when on the ball. Also possesses a good shot. Consistently bosses the midfield at this level with good reviews from all commentators – surprisingly looked a bit lost on his first tem debut against Stoke in the Carling Cup last season (but Stoke away is never an easy place to play and maybe it’s a sign of Spurs management confidence that he made his debut there). Think of mixing the best attributes of Scott Parker, Sandro Ranieri and Jake Livermore, mix, and hey presto….…Massimo Luongo. Think he could replace Parker in 2 years if we are lucky - and maybe even an upgrade.

In the short term think he could certainly hold his own in Championship. Whether he goes on loan or stays this season to play in Europa League (ie named in 25 man squad) to ensure he qualifies as homegrown etc will be a decision for Spurs I think

Thanks SP

Carroll was loaned to Derby last season - and not IMO the best place for him on looan. Reason is that Carroll is a good passer of the ball, not afraid to tacke and a decent shot but is small. Think Derby tried playing him with other small midfield players and it didn't work really. Carroll got a few games, but as I said imo the club and Carroll were badly matched - might have been a step too far but he would have done better at say Swansea (although competition for places would be a problem).

Interesting to see if he stays at Spurs to play Europa League (and maybe in new under 21 league - but probably past that) or Spurs find a better match of loan this season

Longer term, lots of competition for places at Spurs, Carroll is a good player but is he good enough ?

Sorry, misunderstanding SI:
I knew that - the question I was responding to was if Carroll was injured at the present time. What I was saying was that I have no idea if he is injured ATM, or carrying a knock, or fit-as-a-fiddle. I thought you might know (y)

Yeah, just read it.
Would that be as an alternative to paying £7 million for Butland?

Butland at that price makes no sense. He's had a handful of matches in lower divisions so who knows how he will turn out like - think we enquired as Brum needs cash, but IMO only way we could go back is with a low number like £1m plus add ons based on success or £2.5m for cash.

This one is more experienced and at 20 we can see more of what we are getting. At this moment probably more of a rival to Archer/Miles than first team - I expect to see Button contesting a first team place, and maybe Miles and this Ryan will cover u 21 league with Archer on loan ?

Yep...as I commented elsewhere, as soon as I saw "Butland...£7 million", I thought "Chris Kirkalnd...£67 million"

About a million and add-ons would make sense. Obviously Brum are desperate to get as much as they can for him.

I think there has been ITK on how well thought of Button is (not that I'd know anything about the ITK thread (y)). But there again, I thought Jansson was highly thought of, as well :coffee:

Jansson looked good early on - he is a good shot stopper still, and very good at penalty saves but he's not good on communicating/organising defenders or crosses and hasn't seemed to improved in those areas enough. Maybe lack of loans or maybe lack of loans because of these weaknesses.

Button seems to have a better all round game and has generally pretty positive resports from clubs he's been loaned to and ther fans, hence thinking its time to give him a chance at Spurs or at a lowerr Premier league (but these loans are not frequently available)

Much like Joe Hart, it could be the making of him.
