Loans with options to buy seem a smart way for us to bolster the squad immediately while freeing up the transfer budget to be spent on additional players. Also gives us an easy get-out if he doesn't work out.

I'll go along with that - having originally dismissed this signing on account of being opportune rather than thoroughly scouted, it turns out we were linked in the summer (pre José). Happy now to give this one time.

Of course, there is every chance the guy could flop but structuring the deal as we have means that the is relatively little financial risk and potentially very high return. This is the sort of signing (both in terms of player and deal) we should have been making for the past few years and one I suspect that might be replicated more regularly going forward.
