Is he what we need? Probably not.

Would it be funny to make West Ham fans even unhappier? Yes it would.

Tottenham express an interest in bringing in Gedson Fernandes after West Ham agreed a deal in principle to sign the Benfica midfielder
  • Tottenham are discussing a potential 18-month loan move for Gedson Fernandes
  • West Ham agreed a deal in principle for the Benfica midfielder this week
Tottenham have emerged as a potential threat to Gedson Fernandes's move to West Ham.

A deal had been agreed in principle by West Ham for the Benfica midfielder but Tottenham expressed an interest on Thursday afternoon and talks are taking place about a potential 18-month loan switch to north London instead.

West Ham fret after target Gedson Fernandes is offered to Tottenham

• West Ham fear missing out on Benfica midfielder to Spurs
• Tottenham may view Fernandes as good option amid injuries

West Ham fear they will miss out on Gedson Fernandes to Tottenham after learning that the Benfica midfielder has been offered to their fierce London rivals.

West Ham want to sign Fernandes on an initial 18-month loan but the latest twist in a complicated saga has seen Spurs enter the race after being contacted by Jorge Mendes, the player’s new agent. It is understood that Mendes, who has historical links with José Mourinho, has recently started representing the Portugal international.

West Ham have held talks with Benfica over a deal for Fernandes this week and made a fresh proposal to the Portuguese side on Thursday. It is understood that reports of the transfer being agreed in principle are incorrect.

Spurs are in the midst of an injury crisis and may view the offer to sign Fernandes as an opportunity worth taking. Mourinho wants to sign Milan’s Piatek after losing Harry Kane to a hamstring injury until April and he needs reinforcements in midfield, with Moussa Sissoko also out until April following knee surgery. Fernandes, who can play in central midfield or on the right, could give Spurs an easy way of bolstering the depth of their squad.

Fernandes is regarded as a long-term prospect by David Moyes, West Ham’s manager. The 21-year-old, who has also been linked with Everton, Lyon and Manchester United, would not be expected to make an immediate impact.

It is believed that Fernandes has family in London and is open to moving to the city. However it remains to be seen whether Spurs firm up their interest or leave the path free for West Ham.

Know nothing about him but really dont like it's a loan for 18 months, unless it's with an clause to buy.

When he was close to west ham the rumours said it was only 18 months loan without a buying clause

If we're loaning players for 18 months, it has to be players who make an immediate impact. Established or experienced players.

Utterly pointless signing on that basis. Leave those kind of deals to clubs like West Ham.

Exactly! I totally agree but that's why I asked if we have an loan + buy clause.

I haven't seen anything about that so really hope this wont happen, just a waste of money. Better to play our young players instead

I have absolutely no idea what the club are trying to do.

Same old juggling act. Then we wonder why we don't compete and are a mess on the pitch.

How about have a strategy on what players fit your profile? Not just anyone who you can get ahold of for a reasonable fee.

Like everyone else, know very little about him, but it's difficult to shake the feeling that we're only in for him because he's cheap/free. This window feels like it's even worse than previous ones in terms of us having a scattergun approach to targets.

For anyone that has seen him, is he a better player than Sander Berge, for example? He's rumoured to be available for £18m and I can't understand why we've not firmed up our reported interest in him.

Scariest thing about all of this for me. I'd rather they just didn't waste cash on this at all. It's not surprising but at the same time it is.
