He's not a DM. In fact, one of the most frequent criticisms of him is that he coughs up possession in dangerous areas (which was also levelled at Ndombele). Make of it what you will but for my money a loan is the only deal that makes any sort of sense because it only addresses a temporary issue with Sissoko out.

Cheers - so basically Sissoko mk2. i dont even think it is an issue that Sissoko is out. We have enough in there as long as we get a DM which seems unlikely at this juncture.

Thought this was a little bit informative, for those who want to know a bit more about him. Particularly like how it says he rarely passes backwards.

Where does he play?
He joined Benfica's youth system in 2009 and was promoted to the first-team squad for the the start of 2018/19, promptly earning his senior international debut - having represented his country at youth levels.

In that breakout league campaign, Fernandes played either side of central midfield and clocked 1,044 minutes. This term, he has racked up just 215 minutes so far, primarily deployed as an attacking right midfielder.

The graphic below shows his heatmap and key stats from last season, revealing how he typically prefers to work midway inside the opposition half but also drops deeper.

His key attribute is running with the ball, frequently being fouled and winning free-kicks - but he also provides midfield mettle with an above-average number of duels won and forward-thinking distribution.

The touch map below elaborates on the above, revealing how he rarely enters the penalty box but operates deeper in the opposition's half and works into wider areas, while the passing sonar indicates he rarely passes backwards.

Those tendencies play out in his shot map for 2018/19, too. He took only six shots inside the box but attempted 10 from range - all typically coming from the right-of-centre area, with a distance of about 25 yards.

Here's what a Benfica fan said about him

>One of Portugal’s most promising young talents

as a Benfica fan, he really isn't. He was early last season when he first showed, and played well, etc since then he has been average at best. You would be hard press to find him anywhere in that list of Portuguese wonderkinds.

Even at Benfica, for U21 currently in the main team, between Florentino (20), Tomás Tavares (18), Nuno Tavares (19), Jota (20), and him (21) I would put him towards the bottom. And the likes of Ruben Dias and Ferro (starting CBs) are only one year older so... Even in the B team there's more CMs that I'm more hopeful than Gedson

Just smacks of desperation to me, and to be fair, we are desperate, but why not be desperate with even more needed players like a DM, ST, LB, RB? Winks, Ndombele, lo Celso can already play his position. Do you need more than 3 before you decide to bring through a bloke from the academy? Let's not forget that dele can also play in there if we need him too, and Sissoko is injured but plays there as well. It doesn't make sense.
In all honesty if you looked on this forum at the player threads you would wonder how we won a match. Players described as shite and donkeys. So let's take the Benfica fans comment with a pinch of salt and if we do sign maybe give him a chance before jumping on his back.

I’m excited about this, but let’s be honest it’s a punt on a wonderkid whose star has waned a bit. Now we get 18 months to coach him up and get him back on track. If it works, we’re geniuses, if not then nothing really lost.

This feels like an opportunistic move, but in a good way.

I get the comparison to Dele in the fact he’s got some nice flicks and tricks etc, but this kid looks like he can pass a football without 4 touches and to almost always have the ball stationary before he moves it. Upgrade! Bit weird to loan out a youngster tho? Usually teams only do that to lower league teams for game time.
There’s going to be an option to buy. It’s not a loan for Benfica to develop him - it’s essentially us ‘trying him out’ to see if we want him permanently, and makes perfect sense given our limited funds.

I see him as a Sissoko replacement. He will not be a DM.

Makes sense I guess especially considering Sissoko's age.

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if he was used at right midfield.

Then we can play him alongside Dele and Son but he’ll be a bit more all-rounded then having two out and out wingers and Adele behind Kane (when fit natch).

If we played 4-3-3 without Dele could use two wingers flanking Kane but if we’re gonna use 4-2-3-1 with Dele behind Kane still we need a bit more flexibility in the player on the right with Son more direct on left. Especially if Aurier is going to continue to be played and overlap.

Little aphrehensive as our Benfica followers don’t seem to rate him too highly but we’ll see I guess.

I'm pretty sure we've been linked with him for some time now so I am presuming he's been thoroughly scouted and assessed. It does seem quite left-field but I guess injuries and the Spammers thing forced our hand. Last night I saw a mate who supports Benfica and he described him as Dembele with a great shot.

You do have to wonder how much game time he will actually get this season

A fair amount I would imagine. Sissoko is out and he's the closest player to him in play style/position. We're not exactly stacked in midfield. He's 21 so not exactly a kid.
