A heroic Sheffield footballer has been praised for his quick thinking - after the saving the life of a supporter who collapsed during a game.
Ben Scott, the 30-year-old goalkeeper for Stocksbridge Park Steels, was heading down the players’ tunnel after being sent off for a high tackle when he heard cries for help coming from the crowd.
Instinctively, the qualified nurse - who works at Doncaster Hospital - ran back out onto the pitch to the rescue of a supporter who collapsed on the home terraces in the final minutes of the game.
The spectator, aged in his 70s, had stopped breathing, so Ben threw off his gloves and helped St John’s Ambulance volunteers resuscitate the stricken fan.
Ben said: “If I hadn’t been sent off or if I wasn’t playing in the game, I wouldn’t have been able to help the gentleman.
“All I can hope is that he makes some kind of recovery. He’s been given the best chance.”
The modest nurse added: “It was the initial response from the St John Ambulance that saved the man’s life.
“If anyone should take the credit it’s those two. They do it for free. It’s humbling.”
The poorly supporter is now recovering in hospital following the dramatic incident, which happened during Stocksbridge’s game in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, on Saturday.
Ben said he believed the man had developed ventricular fibrillation, where the heart goes into an abnormally irregular rhythm.
Dean Cefferty, Stocksbridge Park Steels’ operations manager, said the club was ‘very proud’ of Ben.
“He was very professional on the day. He just went straight into his mode of going to help. We’re all a close family, not just at Stocksbridge, but all the non-league teams.
“Ben’s the life and soul of the dressing room, definitely the joker in the pack.”
Dean said the medical emergency demonstrated the importance of keeping defibrillator equipment and St John’s Ambulance volunteers on hand at football grounds.
“It highlights the issue,” he said.
“We keep asking to find out how the supporter is doing, but we haven’t heard anything yet.”
