re. wingbacks:

These are full backs who are also attack minded and are encourage and sometimes required to join in the attacking part of the game. Their role is to press forward from defense and create a secondary winger for that side of the pitch.

With regards to number 6, I'm more than happy for Robbie Savage to be paid for his opinion - just as long as Justin Edinburgh can be paid to express his opinion of Robbie Savage slightly more forcefully than he managed in 1999.

I see you've been playing your Football Manager, Lufti. :p

I love seeing teams deploy wing backs properly. Napoli and Juve have used them very well in recent years and Italy bossed Spain with them (particularly Maggio) in this past Confederations Cup.

3-5-2 is one my favourite formations and I'd love to see us try it if we could get in another centre back of the Vertonghen mould to go on the right with Kaboul in the middle. Walker would suit being a wing back too and he's got a lot of energy, likes to push forward and is very determined.

Of course you do, you're Italian! :p

Re Rush Goalie. When I was a kid we has to specify if a goalie was Rush or Stick. It was the precursor to Fluid Football. ;-)

Rush goalie, as others have said. Does anyone else remember the 'Stick' Goalie who was the nominated goal keeper and couldn't leave the goal and 'Spider' Goalie where not only could a side not find anyone who wanted to be in goal but they were also shit, so basically anyone could be goalie at anytime? 'Spider' always degenerated because of arguments over where the penalty area was and just ending up in a game of HandEgg.

Spider, wtf?? It was called Monkey Rush!

I would disagree that wing backs are simply attacking fullbacks. It is an actual position on the pitch, usually associated with a 5 man midfield and a 3 man defence.

For example, Kyle Walker plays as an attacking full back but rarely ever plays as a wing back.

We called it Rush when a goalie did whatever the hell he wanted but only he had the keeping duties and we called it Rush and Punch when all players shared the duty (but it was only allowed when there were uneven teams)

I love football, I watch a LOT of football, but I find myself a little confused by commentators/pundits and a few commentators on here. I think there's a bit of football 'jargon' I'm not getting, so without further ado & with many thanks if anyone answers I have a few questions.

1) What's the difference between full backs and wing backs?

2) What is a 'rush goalie'

3) What is a "false number 9"

4) What is playing 'between the lines'? Isn't this just looking for space to move into?

5) Doesn't playing 'inverted wingers' reduce the service to the striker?

6) Why is Robbie Savage paid for his opinion?

1) Wing backs are full backs with wings. All the better to fly down the touchline.

2) Lloris is a rush goalie. Friedel is not.

3)A midfielder with the striker's number on. Results from employing a work experience kit-man

4)It's like reading between the lines but on a football pitch.

5) That's a corruption of the term 'introverted wingers'. Too shy to take on their fullback.

6) He isn't. He pays for the privilege of shooting off his mouth. Surely.

Anyone else see the question and the username and assume it was going to be about the offside rule?!

Oh, just me then.

LOL, offside I've never had an issue with. Our strikers are usually onside, apart from JD, but the linesmen are against us.

See, easy to remember!

Thanks guys for the answers, especially about the rush, stick, spider, & monkey goalies.

They had a separate playground for the older boys in my primary school, so I had to play rounders with the girls.

Not many better memories than the lunchtime games of wembley singles. Wish I was 13 again :(
