Because one is simply a sign of frustration/anger and the other is trying to dictate the action the referee should take.

It's not hard. You are allowed to be pissed off about something.
Do you honestly think that the gestures and shouts are not an attempt to influence the referee?

Not in all cases, no. Plus I think there is a special place in unsporting behaviour for waving imaginary cards. Maybe it's an English culture thing? I don't know, but it's pretty shitty and I'm glad Kane recognised that.

It's worm-like.

There is absolutely pressure from the players shouting at the ref and the fergies/mourinhos putting pressure on fourth officials. There is no real differance kendall.

I'm glad Kane sorted out Lamela when he was doing that, disgrace.

I thought Joe Hart should've been booked in the game earlier for sticking his face into the refs.

Jumped up head and shoulders dandruff ****. I'd of sent him off. No wonder players have no respect for referees.

You honestly think Pochettino's reaction was in the same ballpark?

No way, Jose.

I'd love to see a ref immediately card a player for a sustained complaint at a decision, or trying to influence the ref. That would change the attitudes in football very quickly.
One ref won't cut it. It would have to be a sustained effort from all PL referees over several weeks or even months.

That debacle still makes my blood boil and the fact there was no follow up makes it even worse. That along with the Mendes goal and the Whole of Foy's performance against stoke are my top 3 refs fucking things up. Words fail me as to how Foy is still a ref after the Stoke performance.....

Narrowly missing out is the Paul Robinson pen against Sevilla and any number of the last 2 years of red cards and pens we have suffered against the top clubs.

And yes something really has to be done about both the card waving and the aggressive confrontation of the ref.

My Dad still goes on about that ridiculous pen as one of the worst decisions he's ever seen, and we always list that along with the Mendes and Nani goals and Foy/Stoke performance!

WRT the Sevilla match, don't forget, this was also the same game (first leg) where Jenas was fouled near the side of the pitch around halfway, and was face-down on the ground for a few seconds during the tangle with the offending Sevilla player - who then got up, and whilst Jenas was still down just about to get himself up, stamped on the back of his head - full-on studs - and casually jogged away like nothing had happened. Jenas, not being a complete pussy, got up holding the back of his head looking seriously pissed off, and asked the ref if he was going to do anything about it - I distinctly remember the ref 'shooing' his arms along for Jenas to hurry up and take the free-kick and get on with the game.

Stamped. On. His. Head.

I looked at that during the replays, I think he put his hand in the air and gestured, but it wasn't a card waving gesture...

Agreed I thought that was more of a Latino 'grabbing at the air to express frustration' type gesticulation myself...

Ahh when the Europa meant something to us! We could've won it that year, the pen brought them back to life and the rest is history.

I heard it was Ramos' tactical genius wot saw off the lumbering Big Pappa Jol and his nice-guy attitude...

I disagree with this. I think Kane stopped a player validly applying pressure on the ref. All the top teams do it and we need that ruthless streak to pressure teams & officials.

not card waving though, that's not ruthless, its faggotry.

Nope, its done all the time by every nationality, and unless we get in on the act we'll be a easy brush off for the officials. We're Spurs, if they deserve a card then we should fight for our right that the punishment is applied for the incident.

Apologies for the double disagree... but i really do.

FIFA or at least the FA needs to change this asap and literally make refs unapproachable except by the captain and then the offending player once called, exactly like in Rugby. Football sets a terrible precedent that it is o.k. to behave in this manner when frankly its appalling.

If I shouted at my boss for something that I thought was wrong i would lose my job and frankly some of the things I am involved in are also in a high pressure situation, all be it without the mob behind me.

Time to change attitudes. Refs should not be above reproach or criticism, but they should be allowed to officiate the game without the abuse and in-face intimidation.

I don't think your posts are necessarily in opposition. I agree with both. I absolutely agree with your post, but it's not up to Tottenham players to start that change.

I play and referee volleyball, and, probably like rugby, the rules are 100 % clear. If you're not the captain and approach the ref that's a warning/card. As a player it's made my card collection look like Roy Keane and Duncan Ferguson's love child on cocaine, but it generally makes the game much more efficient and honourable while it also removes some of the pressure on the referee. All benefitting the game, as it would in football too.

No worries, I agree with you, it should be more like rugby. I just think that since its not we should be taking advantage of it instead of being mugged off
