Dier hasn't looked this fit since the 2018 World Cup. Ever since he's struggled for form, fitness, and I keep saying this but I think his appendicitis did a serious number on his body somehow. Hopefully these three months have helped him get his body back in shape.

He showed today that he can be a very good CB for us and it was a very good performance bar the brain fart.

Not sure it was a brain fart just a tired moment

Perhaps, he was also up against the freshest player on the pitch who'd only been on five minutes and who did pull off a lovely piece of skill to beat him. It just felt so unnecessary to put the arm on him.

Jose's praising him massively in his interview too.

Didnt think it was a penalty even remotely, was the standard arm jostle you see all over the pitch, pogba wrapped his left leg vardy style. It wouldnt have even been a talking point had it not been given.

Was MOTM for me and its a shame that moment happened. We should continue with him there.

I thought that he had a great game, most fit i've seen him in a while. Just a shame about that pen, if the roles were reversed I believe that nothing would've been called but I'm biased. Look forward to see what a Dier/Alderweireld CB pairing will look like

Was never a pen. Pogba bought it and Moss couldn't wait to give it. Dier got done by a good piece of skill but shouldn't have been left isolated.

Well played Eric. Seen a big change in most recent games. I think he's back and will be a mainstay at cb for years.

Yeah, encouraging from Eric. He's a leader, at least.
Agreed. Good performance and could hear him talking constantly. We’re missing leaders on the pitch and he’ll find it easier to organise things from centre back where he has all the play in front of him.

I said it in the ratings thread but it’s relatively easy as a CB when you defend that deep. Are we defending that deep because we don’t have confidence in the back line or is it an overriding plan. If people dont want us to defend that deep every week do they have confidence in Dier and Sanchez defending another 20 yards of space in behind them? I don’t. It’s going to be a big problem for us going forward I think

No we are defending that deep because our manager is Jose Mourinho and we are playing a top 6 side. We have played deep every single game against a top 6 side and Jose has played that way for every team he has managed.

I do have confidence, because Sanchez is actually pretty good at one on ones and covering the space behind him. His weaknesses are more in clearing the ball and staying focused and organised. BUt under Mourinho this will neer happen, simply because Jose does not play with a high line.

Dier we don't really know, he hasn't played CB regularly for a long time, and when he did it was normally in a back three. But, Dier's biggest weaknesses have always been focus and being turned a bit too easily. People complain he is slow, but he really isn't, particularly over long distances. I guess he just doesn't have that burst, and any player without that burst is always instantly labeled as slow!

Probably true on Dier. Although while playing really really deep what is the need of speed over long distances for a CB?

Penalties happen, shit happens but he was excellent
This. The pen was soft as hell and Pogba dived. I can see why it was given but Dier had a great game otherwise, and blocked a certain goal before the pen.

That block was awesome... the thing is - when our team is backed up in their 18 yrd box - shit will happen - this happened
