The inclusion of Jenas is brilliant by Capello. It sends out the message right away that if you're playing well, you'll get spotted. I don't think even the biggest Jenas-haters on this site can argue with the fact that he's been playing well for over a month now, and consistently.

He's the only exciting thing about the team selection for me, and it's not just me being a Yid.

Ok, maybe it is.

ENGLAND FORMATION UPDATE

Right, the latest on the England formation is that they will line up 4-1-4-1.
This involves Barry shielding the back four, and then - from left to right across midfield - Joe Cole, Jenas, Gerrard and Bentley. Rooney is up front on his own.

Hope Capello whips 'em into shape--I like the rules he introduced, just what was needed IMHO; time to bring the dignity back to the Lions and leave the wags and agents at home.

Congrats JJ! Hoping for a solid performance and no injuries.

Rooney up front with Cole in behind him?

Let's hope JJ gets a hattrick, get rested against Derby, then go all out for the cups.

Switzerland will probably play in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Goalkeeper Diego Benaglio was just named number 1 for the game against England and probably for the European Championship.

In defense the Swiss miss 3 players, who would normally start (Degen, Müller, Magnin), so Lichtsteiner, Eggimann and Spycher start alongside Senderos.

The defensive midfield is imo the most talented part in the Swiss team. Inler and Fernandes (Manchester City) are both still young but if they can perform as they did in the last games for the national team, they could form a strong partnership.

The offensive midfield consists of Barnetta (we've once been linked to him), Yakin and Gygax. Of the three Barnetta is the most dangerous one, he has a good workrate and has the eye for other players. Yakin can be a brilliant player when he has a good day (maybe any of you remember the Champions League campaign of FC Basel some seasons ago, when they played Liverpool), but on other days he can be quite frustrating to watch. Gygax can be dangerous, because he has a nice shot.

Up front the Swiss play Blaise N'Kufo, because regular starters Streller and Frei are injured or just coming back from injury. N'Kufo is a good striker, but he shouldn't cause too many problems to the English defense. He will have to try to get the offensive midfield into play.

Generally the Swiss will play a game relying on counterattacks. The English fullbacks should be very careful since the Swiss wingers Barnetta and Gygax are quite fast (not that much of a problem for Cole but Brown should really be careful).

Since Switzerland plays a weakened side with many regulars missing, England should win this. But if the Swiss can get an early goal it could become really hard to score against them (they haven't conceaded a goal in the last world cup till the shoot out against the Ukraine).

THE FOUR STAGES OF MANAGING ENGLAND
1. Spectacular victory by eleven heroes in flight
2. Unimpressive victory against high-quality opponents
3. Unimpressive victory against low-quality opponents
4. Spectacular implosion by eleven stars in denial
--From the Guardian, thought it was kind of funny

Let's hope that Capello makes a break with (recent) tradition...

Good luck to JJ. He deserves his chance on form over the last 2months.
I am not his biggest fan but fair play to him lately. Hope he has a blinder

I expect a comfortable win. Great for JJ glad he is playing. Glad Woody isn't.

Man to watch for Switzerland will be Inler in central midfield. Saw him for Udinese against Inter 10 days ago and he was top class, going to be a very very very good player in a few years.

Didn't the Portugal World Cup game two years ago prove that Rooney cannot play as a lone striker? He got too frustrated with the lack of service, came deep and stamped on someone's balls and got sent off as I recall.
