It has probably not escaped everyone's attention that Jermaine Defoe has scored quite a few goals since going to Pompey.

This doesn't really surprise me. Although his last few months at Spurs were crap, whenever he got a decent run in the team, he always scored goals. I remember last season when Keane was injured and everyone was going on about the "Defoe/Berbatov" partnership. Similarly, I can imagine that if Bent got a proper run in the team (eg 7 or 8 consecutive starts, not the occasional 20 mins here and there) he could score lots of goals. At the time I was happy for Defoe to be sold, because he couldn't break up the Keane/Berbatov partnership and he wasn't effective coming off the bench. Still, it is galling to see him scoring so many for Pompey, particularly since we've struggled somewhat for goals in recent games. Defoe was a natural goalscorer for Spurs WHEN he got a run in the team.

My point is really that by sticking so firmly to the Keane/Berbatov partnership, the 3rd (or 4th) choice striker really doesn't get much time on the pitch to affect things. Some strikers are supersubs who seem to thrive off coming off the bench and scoring in their 20 mins on the pitch but neither Defoe nor Bent really seem like that kind of player. Looking at Defoe's situation at Spurs reminds me of Peter Crouch's current situation at Liverpool. Crouch was excellent last season, but Benitez has gone for Torres and Kuyt up front, and Crouch is feeding off scraps and falling out of form. I was really surprised to see Ramos start with Keane and Berbatov up front against Man City because I felt that it was time for Bent to get a decent run in the team, particularly as both Keane and Berbatov have looked knackered over the last month or so. At the moment Bent looks crap, but I think that given a proper run in the team he could prove himself. I don't want to end up with another Defoe situation on our hands, where Bent fails to break up the Keane/Berbatov partnership, hardly plays for us, gets sold to another club where he starts every week and then scores loads of goals.

We have little to play for except pride at the moment. Let's see Ramos giving Bent a proper run in the team and find out if he really is worth £16.5 million.

6 games 6 goals for Defoe. I can see what you mean, but i dont think it will happen, Keane wouldn't want to be dropped in favour of Bent and they certainly cannot risk dropping Berbatov, if we want him to stay. I think, if Bent shines in his half games he'll get more of a run, right now he hasn't justified it though.

Apparently, no-one gives a shit. Oh well.

Is there a section of Spurs Community for people who do give a shit? Because I've got a lot of shit to give.

Defoe actually has a midfield to work off of. If Bent were there he'd be knocking 'em in too.

It's the problem that the managers of the top half of the Premiership will be entertained with. Keeping three or even four top drawer strikers sweet. With four top quality forwards aiming for Jol's / Ramos's favours, there was always going to be some casualties - the make-up of a player like Keane / Defoe / Crouch / Torres / Rooney etc etc mean that they want to start.

And then there's always going to be one out of four that doesn't even make the bench.

Defoe isnt what we would be needing just now (bugt well done for him for showing what he can do, and could have done for us) , maybe his running and could have add'd a slight bit of pace, but its midfield where we need new players, untill we sort that out our strikers will suffer from poor service and have very little good chances created for them

Somehow whenever I watch Defoe I still feel like he is a Spurs man and a piece of me wishes he was still with us. In fact I was always happy for him whenever he did well for us , more than many other players. Although he never quite reached the heady heights of goalscoring that he did in his early months with us ( in fact he too often underperformed especially away from home )and although he refused to sign a contract extension the Yiddo song seemed to fit him so well.

I seem to recall Defoe doing something similar for us when he first signed, if come the the end of next season he's got 20 league goals then maybe we made a mistake, otherwise it was a decent bit of business and good luck to the lad

Difference being Robbie has had his two best seasons for Spurs, and berba is gifted like the lord Jesus. Not playing JD has not been an incorrect decision. You cant argue with that.

Where as Kuyt is an awful finisher. Crouch had a definate reason to be pissed off about not being included

So? It's a different team with different playing system etc. So far he has been great for them, but it just didn't work out with us. And that it was matters.
