He was my first footballing hero both for club and country, I was a bit too young to appreciate the likes of hoddle but was 8 years old in 1988 when he joined us, so he was well up there for me, watching him light it up in the early nineties was the stuff of dreams. Its tragic to see him like this. If the worst happens and his illness kills him I will be tying a scarf for him at the lane which is something ive never done for anybody else.
I feel like that too. I was 16 when I first saw him at the Lane and he was my first footballing hero.

I loved Gazza as a player, but i have no sympathy for him right now. He's the one pouring the drink down his throat, no one else.

And I know people are going to jump to his defense. It's an addiction, disease, etc, etc. But he's only got one person to blame. Himself.

He does need to take responsibility for his actions because noone else can: absolutely. That said, to me I think that the drink is just masking other deep rooted issues and I am not in a position to judge how bad those issues are. Yes, perhaps he is just a weak person but then again he might have some very bad mental health issues that he just can't overcome. Who knows? I feel sorry for him because his life has been a F**k up for the last 15-20 years and he's mainly hurting himself.

That Sun article must be wrong.

It isn't (strangely for the Sun ). The guy who runs the team was just on TalkShite half an hour ago talking about signing him up. Didn't sound like he really expected him to ever turn out for them though.

Like most others on here who saw him in his prime this is very hard to take. He's another flawed genius I'm afraid. When their careers are over they need something else to replace the buzz that football gave them and it often turns out to be alcohol. I hope he can pull himself around but I fear it is too late now. Whenever I see him I remember that day at Wembley in 91 when he destroyed Woolwich single handedly - one of the best days of my life.

That was an incredible match. Even though Gazza missed 3/4 of the final in '91, his performances on the way were enough to ensure that he totally deserved his medal.

Without a doubt we wouldn't have won the cup without Gazza. He was fantastic in that match and also single handedly dragged us through the previous round away at Pompey.

As usual bloody paparazzi stalking him waiting for this to happen.

This story makes me sad and angry, i want to remember Gazza the footballer who dazzled in the #8 Lilly white shirt, i want to remember that free kick, yet i know i'm going to see on the news or in the rags that he has drunk himself to death and an accompanying horrible picture of the person in that picture.

That some shit without conscience and an agent have made money out of this really pisses me off, they helped build Gazza but they're not so quick to help Paul Gascoigne.

I know Gazza has to help himself but he's an addict with many demons and it's not that easy, perhaps my anger is misplaced but if they cared about the man who was such a great player for club and country, they would stop reporting on him.

Al in my humble opinion.

This is worth a watch.

Unfortunately for Gazza, I don't think he's got the right support around him to prevent him from relapsing. He alienated most of his family I believe, he surrounded himself in the '90s with all those sycophants like Baker and Evans. I unfortunately know of about half a dozen family members who are/were just the same... some it killed, the other its killing them, and they don't care.

What do you say, too many people have tried to help him. Many people provided money to try and help him too.

Fella is beyond help, which is sad to say - can blame all sorts to be honest with you, he had the world at his feet and lost it all.

We see it happen time and time again... from Fatty Arbuckle to Robin Williams. Local lad does good, get's thrust into global superstardom, unable to handle it, hits the bottle/needle/whatever to cope, ends up ruined by it. It's devastating, because it's all because these people, as soon as they get some fame, are jumped all over by these marketing/media vultures who all want a piece of them. And as soon as the fame dips, they're left to rot.

There's another photo on that link now where he's wearing a jacket and sunglasses. Looks ok in that one.
