It is the exact type of risk we have to take, as we are not in a position to sign the already established players, we need to get them when they are up and coming.

We need to take them when they are up and coming but why to pay 20 mil for such a player from the EPL when you can pay 7-10 mil for such players from the French league or Spain....you minimize the risks...
Real or Chelsea can afford them self to buy a flop at 20 mil but we don't !!!

Benteke is nothing like Darren Bent. His hold up / link play is far more developed than Lukaku's right now (understandable given the age difference) and if anything his weakness is inconsistent finishing. Benteke shows flashes of Lewandowski at times, tbh. I'm not surprised he's been linked to Dortmund. Klopp could probably turn him into a scarily complete forward.

Lukaku will likely still be the better player eventually (he's not right now) but it's kind of pointless to even discuss that, isn't it? We aren't going to sign him.

I like Benteke a lot because he can play those clever combinations around the box and knows how to set his teammates up. It'd be a risk to sign him still and I doubt it will happen because he'd cost too much, but comparing him to Bent is underselling his talent.

He did 1 backheel pass in the box, and suddenly he's a clever assister??
Anything over 15m for Benteke is madness.

He's not like Bent in style, but he's as good as him. Nothing more.

That's the problem. Benteke, because he's only 1 year into his deal at Villa at likely low or at least reasonable wages, would be very expensive for them to replace. As a result, the price they need is more than a non-sheik/oligarch-owned team is going to pay. It might be crazy for us to pay their asking price, but it's at least as crazy for them not to demand it.

If you honestly think this I have a feeling I've watched him more than you. Of course the backheel to the Weimann kid was a highlight but he's done a lot more than that.

He averaged 1.6 chances created per game and 33 passes per game. Compare that to Lukaku and JD who do about half of that. The biggest strength of his game IMO is the way he accommodates teammates and sets people up. He is absolutely a "clever assister" as you put it. His ceiling as a football player dwarfs Bent.

That said, I agree that we shouldn't spend 25m or something silly on him, because I'm not sure he's the right type of player for AVB and I'm not so sure he'd score enough goals to warrant that fee.

I think in a perfect world AVB would want a pure goalscorer to surround with more creative wide forwards and even fullbacks. His Porto team was heavily set up to feed Falcao--a player who doesn't do a lot other than scoring tons and tons of delicious goals.

RT: @sportbbcwm Confirmation from #avfc Benteke has handed in transfer request. Club say will consider offers matching their valuation.

I'm disappointed for Villa fans but I'd really like him.

Not disappointed for Lambert at all though, getting a taste of his own medicine.

I'd love this, his diving header against Everton last season had me saying to my boys "thats a striker boys, thats a striker". Would be a very very good signing, or Michael Ricketts.......I'm staying optimistic. BEAST

I'd like him but I'd be stunned if this happened. They are going to want too much, Danny will never pay it

Has Chelsea written all over it. Have probably thrown massive wages at him and turned his head.

From Cavani to Benteke. Really? I'd have thought they would be looking at someone a bit better.
