If we're prepared to shell out £20-25m then is it not worth going for Martinez? He is older but he looks a better player.

Aston Villa are a big team
A really big big team.

After 60 minutes they are level 1-1 against......german fifth division midfield club SV Rödinghausen.

Good job Villa.

does he? i'm not saying he doesn't as i haven't really seen much of him but playing up front for porto in the portuguese league can make players appear deceptively good. benteke's proven it in england, for a weak team.

Talking of odenwingie would you take him for a season? Useful player with more zip than a Dempsey and can come in off the left also provide more goals than a Lennon

If we were going to pay 20-25 mil there's a whole host of strikers I'd rather go for

I agree he is not worth that sort of money, but i would say he is the best striker we can afford and it seems he wants to come.

Sure hes not a villa, falco, or higuiam but they didnt/dont want to play for us and we probably would struggle to pay their wages and transfer fee if they did, we might have to pay a bit over the odds for someone like benteke because he is probably realalisticly the best striker we are likely to get

only falcao outscored him last season from those three and even then a large chunk of his goals were from the spot. i really don't know what people want, he ticks a lot of boxes;

- young
- big
- quick
- powerful
- scores goals
- can link up play moderately well
- seemingly would want to join
- proven in this league (albeit over a short length of time)
- belgian

Shame #THFC missed out on David Villa. Suspect Benteke saga may run and run all summer.

@Jonny_Moffett What do I know..was told Benteke wasn't a target. Was told Soldado wasn't a target. But Benteke is now.

Think you'll find Clubs rarely get what they initially demand, we asked for 40M for Modric and got about 30/33M. Villa are no different to any other Club, they're asking for 30M, Levy will be looking to haggle them down to 18-20M, 22M max.

Firstly Villa are asking for 25 million. Secondly we would of got 40 million for Modric the summer he wanted to go, especially selling domestically. Modric went a year later abroad, totally different scenario. Thirdly, when Clubs are in a strong position contractually over a player they badly want to keep they are likely to receive close to the value they've put on the player.

I'm not saying you don't have a point, you do - particularly when all parties want it resolved, a meeting in the middle can occur. But in a situation like this I can see Villa standing pretty firm. I'd be amazed if we got Benteke below 20 million, for example. I'll still be surprised if we get him below the 25. Its a bit suicidal to set a price publicly and then back down on it. Not good for future dealings not to mention a negative reaction from supporters. Announcing a figure publicly is very relevant from the point of view of their own supporters. In other words the Villa board are covering they're backs in that respect as well.

Well that's that then. A summer saga with a bid with hours to go below their valuation will get knocked back and we'll be left with a far inferior secondary target.

We either pay up or move on now, its that simple for me.

I'm just weary about spending big money on potential one season wonders

I'd much rather go for proven talent like Soldado, Higuain or Negredo to name but afew

tbh though I am starting to warm to the idea of Benteke I just doubt we'll beable to reach an agreement with Villa

That looks like us using the media to let villa know where we stand , don't Madrid do this all the time

Totally agree. If we've got our sights set on Benteke than we will just dick around until the last minute of the window to squeeze a few quid out of us. Villa don't want to sell him so they'll just let it drag on. I'd rather see City or Chelsea just come in in the next couple of weeks and pick him up than having to settle with a last minute inferior signing just to make up the numbers.

Doesn't look like an agreement is going to be reached unfortunately. Time to move on, but to who? Fuck knows. Frustrates me so much that we haven't hijacked the Bony transfer, he's half the price.

My point is the figure we were all hearing was last summer was "40M", "40M and no lower" and many fans on forums were quite shocked and annoyed we only got 30M in the end, yet we are all still Spurs fans. I think your words were "It would be suicidal for Villa to sell for anything less than what they have quoted", c'mon mate, do you really think Villa fans would desert their team for the sake of 5M, or one player?, they might be gutted for a few days like we were over Modric, but life moves on.
