Can we take a moment to laugh heartily at Everton?

Noticed this out of curiosity - when looking at fan's "reasons to be cheerful" in the last 25 years, Everton are an anomaly.

Since they last won a cup (1995), it's looking like they are the only club in the football league that hasn't had a "reason to be cheerful".
I was counting promotions and competition wins.

Not sure how far to look, but certainly the case down to the bottom of the Championship so far.

Of course "not being relegated" is a factor, but there's a silver lining to going down and coming back up again in that at least it usually has an honour involved.

Interesting take on things. Personally, I'd add playing in the Champions league (group stages and onwards) to it as, in my view, its the equivalent of getting promotion without winning a league.

Still wouldn't help Everton though as I think they have only managed to get into the qualifiers once where they lost! And the one time they would have been straight into the competition Liverpool won it and came outside the top four meaning Everton missed out...

This is the same year you're talking about. Everton's only top 4 finish was in 2005 and they entered the last qualifying round (lost, as you say, to a very good Villarreal side) as every 4th place team did back then. Liverpool even started in the first qualifying round that year because it was a scenario UEFA had never thought about. Liverpool didn't fuck Everton over that season, Everton were unlucky with the draw and some dodgy refereeing in the tie.

The rule that later fucked us over was born because of this year.

I thought they would have announced Benitez by now if they were that keen on him. Cold feet because of a few idiots maybe?

I should have known better than try to remember something from 15 years ago without googling it first!
I thought Liverpool had f**ked them over twice with Heysel in '85/87, then winning it whilst coming outside of the top four.
Instead I find out that they f**ked us over instead as that prompted the rule change. Even more reason to hate them.

Why are Liverpool fans so pissed at Benitez managing Everton?
It’s not like he did a Sol and straight from one to the other.
Maybe they look at last season and see Everton now as a potential threat?!?

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.
We won nothing with him anyway.

If he went straight from us to them then I would be annoyed, but 10 years later, in which time you win the PL and CL?!?

Most Liverpool fans I know (know a bunch live that way) aren't bothered/find it funny. Another reason to bash them with that small club belief. Gonna be a fascinating watch when Everton go to Anfield next year and Liverpool are waving their Rafa flag
