I've always liked Rovers' motto Arte et labore, skill and labour. Too bad the badge looks horrible.

There's always:

but I enjoy how clean the current one looks.

If we're voting... I'll go for Latin - It would have been a load of pretentious crap in 1882 (not many people spoke it then) but mottos sound REALLY crap in English - it just doesn't work...

Times change and we need to start building for the new history of Tottenham Hotspur - forget Latin, lets just have Come On You Spurs in the tunnel before the players come out!

Jeez...a discussion on finer points of Latin on SC. Impressive !

Keep the Latin - it'll intimidate Roma preseason and Milan when we play them in the UEFA Cup

Oh, but it is pronounced as 'es' and has been misused for many a year before. The letter 's' derived from the romanic calendar and the alphabet in english was born, hence the latter translation of 'est' which the french now use.

Come to my lovely little practice and we can discuss it over a coffee and a lovely liitle credit card machine.

Hate to be an old stick in the mud, but I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

'Es' is a latin word in it's own right which means 'are' or 'be', whilst 'est', like you say, is just standard 'is'.

At least, that's the way it was when I studied latin..

I've always been a big fan of the latin version.

Was close to getting a tat of it at one point, but learned my lesson when I got then old badge tattooed on me then the club go and change it one month later.

I'd get an "N17" tat next, but I'm not even sure that this will be safe going forward.

How about 'E17'?

That would rock.

I did Latin at school, and the teacher explained that most words are pronounced exactly as they are written. So I would pronounce it Owdery Est Fackery.

Cheers for this info, the exact prononciation isn't of to much concern just wanted a general idea of how to get my mouth round it so to speak... Good to see we have numerous latin speakers here though... Bloody public school boys !
