But some people were suggesting that the Hudd needed to lose two or three stone, which was, and is, ridiculous. As the Hudd himself said in that article, he's lost a bit of weight—which is, frankly, a pretty imprecise statement—but the important thing is that he's improved his stamina. That's been far more apparent in recent matches than any loss of weight.

I agree with this but it isn't just about stamina, the players look sharper and are reacting to situations quicker.

And of course the longer your fitness stays during a game the longer your concentration and focus stays as well.

And personally I think it will lead to us getting less injuries.

Wait till the start of next season when they can get another 40 kilos off with the pre-season training and we'll really take off towards the top of the table.

What's ironic about this is that when Gross attempted to impose a similar regime at Spurs ten years ago his efforts were treated as one enormous joke.

I do, but it remains a fact that there was unrestrained glee in the tabloids when his fitness guru was refused a work permit—pretty much as if to say, 'We don't need this new-fangled Continental nonsense in England.'

It maybe that this season the team were unfit but, last season you don't go on the sort of run we did at the end of season if the team were unfit. This season everything that could go wrong at the beginning of the season did go wrong. :-(

And what about the season before? Much the same crap start. I think the fact that we started so slowly both times and seemed to slip up late in games, suggests our pre-season preparation wasn't very good on either occasion. We probably got better because the players finally caught up in terms of getting match fit as the season went on. This is, if anything, is further evidence that the squad was unfit.

When Alvarez has finished with the players his attention will turn to the fans. Be prepared for weigh-ins when you enter WHL and ticket-prices based upon weight targets!

As has been said, the proof is in the pudding (!). Where we stand at the end of the season - v.unlikely we will be 5th - but what level of football we are playing, how strongly we finish the season.

He's still the same shape though. So what exactly were you laughing about? My point at the time was you're not gonna see him suddenly slim down to a Jenas type frame. He's a big boy who's lost a bit around the face and probably toned up his legs a bit but the fella wasn't fat - which is what I had the problem with people saying

And no, Bobishism - I'm not making it up. I've seen Huddlestone walking lengths of the swimming pool at what is now the Virgin Active, where the Top Golf is in Chigwell - some, what, 6 months ago?

I don't think that anyone suggested he was some sort of X-Men style shape changer, just that he needed to lose some weight. And not just from around his face as I doubt he was carrying 3 or 4 kilos around his chin.

As far as weight/fitness is concerned I would certainly agree that fitness itself is the biggest factor, but at the highest level if a 10lb handicap on a top racehorse is enough to level the playing field then it would have an even greater effect on a footballer.
