This game so far kind of answers all the questions. Mainoo starts with Bellingham/Rice, Foden left, Walker Stones Maguire Shaw at the back. Toney backup to Kane. Bowen should definitely go as well

No way Southgate puts Mainoo in ahead of Trent IMO.

This should certainly put to bed the idea that Bellingham can't play in the midfield that seems to have cropped up recently.
With Rice holding and Mainoo and Bellingham playing with freedom and confidence, it's probably been the best midfield performance for a while.

Agreee xcept Maguire cannot start and should arguably not even be in the squad. He is not at the required level, and as we saw against Brazil is a mistake waiting to happen.

He's certainly earned a place in the squad though, if maybe not in the starting 11.
But going on this admittedly tiny showing, I'd think twice about not starting him.

We’re too far gone to question it now. If Braithwaite can’t come on at HT here for Dunk he’s not starting against Serbia.

I think Maguire will start just because he's been good in other tournaments. I still can't understand how Tomori doesn't get a place but it is what it is. Maguire will start

No one has ever suggested Bellingham can’t play with two deeper midfielders. The argument is whether you can play him as an 8 with someone like Maddison. I think you absolutely can but tonight will just reinforce Southgate’s view that he is a 10 and needs two behind him. To be fair it has worked well and mainoo looks a huge step up on Henderson and Gallagher in that role

Only just got home. Some nice interplay between Bellingham and Foden so far. Foden brilliant on the half turn.

The backline looks all over the place.

Good to see Southgate assessing his options with his normal diligence and skill. So glad Maddison went with the squad to play zero mins so far, Cole palmer has been excellent this season but again, why bother looking at him. It’s almost as if picking 7 players for 2 positions was a complete waste of time

It's been much more fluid than just two behind him though.
Rice is sitting deep, Bellingham and Mainoo seemingly given the freedom to push forward.
I don't think Bellingham is playing a 10 tonight.

It's wild that Mainoo looks like the best player on the pitch

Also Bowen is more skilled with the ball than I realized. Sometimes I thought it was Foden then realized it was Bowen
