I just watched Jan Vertonghen score a potential winner in an UCL qualifier (PAOK v Benfica). Pity it was an own goal.
Love Jan.
Me too. But he looks even worse now.
Benfica about to crash out of the UCL before it even starts.
Oh, and Vinicius just came in as a sub.
And a defensive midfielder protecting them.Would have loved to have seen Jan stay a bit longer. Him and Toby could still perform at a high level if we had two good fullbacks taking the pressure off them. Rose and Walker did it admirably. With Doherty and someone like Reguillon,he could still be an excellent player.
Yes, a really top defensive midfielder. Hojbjerg could be very good but I would love Sangare in as well. And a defensive midfielder protecting them.
I don't think Jan has lost it, I just think he's hit a period of poor form at the worst time in his career. You don't go from some sensational performances from wing back no less to being useless overnight

He might have not cut it playing Poch’s high line and with Davies outside him. With a deeper back four and a better left back who knows.Perhaps one more season? He lost it, his legs were gone.
People really need to let this go, he knew it, Jose knew it, Poch knew it - he was done as Spurs - shame he couldn't win anything with us but it was time to move on.
This is starting to remind me of the Dembele revisionism, he was in the same boat - neither player wasn't up to it anymore.
Spurs have upped their social game so much.
I mean concussion going on that long is not that uncommon, particularly if you don't take adequate rest. But once recovered the chances of a second concussion double, but that is still pretty low odds. The damage may be done, but he may only find out about what damage that is many years from now. It's highly unlikely after recovering that there will be any significant mid-term effects. Why didn’t he retire this summer? What if he suffers another? Doesn’t even have to be as major once the damage is done. Should just retire to Belgium and drink beer. But what a shame. Without that bizzarre moment, he’d be playing his best for us right now.
