Shocking story. Football will forever be in the dark ages, sadly. Once again it lags way behind sports that have far less reach and far less financial muscle. Dealing with head injuries properly should be a given in this day and age

They definitely need to change the protocols for head injuries during the game. To be fair to the club if he didn't tell them he was still experiencing problems months afterwards they aren't going to know and be able to give him the support he needed. They probably would have sent him for a scan and to see a specialist if they'd known.

Even more respect for the guy. We should bring him back as a coach as he’s a legend in my eyes.

Explains so much regarding his drop off of performances.

didn’t deserve to leave us that way.

What a shame and does explain a lot about his last season. Unbelievable player and servant to the club. One of only a handful of players i truly respect and admire.

Damn if it was due to his head injury and not his legs going I would have 100% liked to have kept him in the summer!

Shameful story. We all need to wake up to this stuff.
Football really needs to introduce independent doctors who do HIAs with temporary substitutions.

This is from 20 years ago. I know it's a different sport. Just be aware of the warnings though. This guy is in his 40's.

Wow he really should have spoken up. Its crazy that he continued to play and head the ball.
I believe in the early Amazon documentary episodes José was told that Jan is the one that plays through the pain barrier. Just in some people's nature not to make a big deal of things (sometimes to their detriment)
These decisions are less than ever in the players hands now but obviously there is still a way to go.

We don’t know the full details so it is hard to blame anyone at the club. Concussion is hard to diagnose if the person doesn’t speak up fully which Jan has admitted. I am sure the medical department would not have advised he played if were aware he was suffering headaches and dizziness. It does explain a lot though as the drop off from 18/19 to 19/20 was so sudden and dramatic.

Sorry but whilst I agree with you about great respect for him why does that mean he will be a decent or better coach ? No room for passengers amongst the coaching staff. If he turns out to be a good coach bring him in but let him prove it first.

In any major North American sport, he wouldn't have been allowed to carry on playing while suffering symptoms of a major head injury and it's an incredible shame, can easily cost him quality of life later in life and he'd probably still be playing for spurs.

The whole sport needs to take head injuries serious and hopefully Kane is fucked in the same manner.

I see he and Toby both starting for Belgium tonight. Makes me a bit nostalgic. I don't think many people realise how lucky we've been to have them both... as a defensive pairing they're head and shoulders the best we've had at Spurs. And I was mascot in 1990 when Mitchell Thomas played.
