But don’t the best managers find systems for the “best players”?

If he is the best CB at Inter, Conte finds a system which suits.
Conte has his preferred system and fits players into it, not the other way round.

He's not gonna change the system he's consistently played for most of his career to suit one CB. He's the most stubborn fucker on the planet.

This is literally the antithesis of Conte’s management style. He has a rigid style...players either adapt or they go.
He then signs players and if they don't fit immediately (Eriksen) he agitates to the board to get them out

I remember Halis making comments about Barca and Real Madrid were in the hunt for Skriniar last November. He said he saw Madrid as the more likely of the two... that obviously didn't happen, but this was less than a year ago.

Which leads me to start to wonder did the club start off intending not to go crazy with spending but realised that they needed to be more ambitious due to panicking about missing out on top 4 etc? Or was it all a ploy to make selling clubs think we had little money and couldn't spend too much?

I'd like to think the latter and that its allowed us to get Doherty and Hojbjerg on the cheap, two players who are decent but not exactly worth spending 20-30m+ on.

However I imagine it's probably the former.

I can’t possibly imagine we pleaded poverty with Jose and then after one shit performance against Everton Levy and Lewis had an epiphany.

F. Romano said on his podcast today that Mourinho sees him as one of the best cb in the world, I haven't seen enough of him or will pretend to, but if that's what JM thinks and we get him in then fair play

We played Inter twice and he was solid in both legs, we had to score an absolute fucking brilliant team goal to get past them in the 2nd tie.
We played Watford twice last year, scoring once across both fixtures. Nobody’s making a casing-point for signing Craig Cathcart.

The sample size has got to be bigger then two games!

Maybe not but I wouldn't be surprised if Levy did panic to some extent. Like he penny dropped the squad was dead and it needed drastic changes not 3 or 4 tweaks.

Jose, close journos, Levy, ITKs - they all said it would be a case of finding loans and frees and that we will be making subtle changes to the squad.

Doherty, Hart and Hojbjerg fit that strategy and then Reguilon and Bale came and ripped that idea up.

Sorry, but some of you really embarrass yourselves when we’re linked with players who don’t play in England. Declare you’re ignorant to them as a player and then pass judgement - makes no sense.

He was coveted by a host of huge clubs last year but Inter wouldn’t entertain interest. He’s fallen slightly out of favour with a nutty twat manager but he’s 25 and already world class. He’d be our best centre back if we managed to sign him, and comfortably at that.
