I think the idea that he can’t play in a back 3 is crazy. Surely you can’t go from world class in a 2 and the bad in a 3. From what I’ve seen of him he likes to start deep and then move forward into challenges aggressively. I think that is why he struggles with Conte’s system because playing a high line means less play in front to attack and more balls in behind. He isn’t the quickest but I also think that is being overblown too, he’s not slower than Toby or Dier.

In fact he is sort of the same kind of player as Dier, or at least what Mourinho wishes Dier would be. Difference is Skriniar reads the game really well and has great defensive positioning which means he can attack and cut out a threat. Also has a pretty surprising range of passing for a guy you would consider to be a traditional hard nosed defender. It’s not always elegant, there is no dancing around with the ball but it’s uncompromising and effective.

It's indeed Tom Crean. I read that book a couple of years and it's a fantastic read. Yeah, I'm very fascinated by the exploration (Especially the Antarctics) era around the turn of the 20th century.

Had a pint at his family pub last year. Only living n hour from it.

He said Poch was on borrowed time and that Jose was the preferred option if I recall correctly and has definitely called stuff in the past.

I do genuinely hope this is accurate because if we do bring in quality players in those 3 positions we are essentially capable of challenging for everything and have real strength and depth.
He was also very good - especially - when we were recruiting players in window we sold Bale

Conte does seem to have very fixed views on what type of player suits his philosophy, so this is another situation that could hopefully be to our benefit?

So, let's just completely ignore my painstaking avatar change... :cautious:

Pretty big statement of intent to waltz over and put 35m on the table, in a window where our net spend is already in the 40-50m threshold and that's without a striker. And don't get me wrong, Skrininar in the 17-18 season was viewed as one of the best prospects in Europe and maybe the most prized defender, that is before Conte came in. I do worry about his lack of pace when you consider that our potential best XI would have 3 very slow players in PEH-Doherty-Skriniar, especially with the '3 forwards' attack we have planned. When your midfielders don't track back well your defenders have to cover a lot of ground. All it takes is one blocked shot from Bale or Kane and some serious questions would be asked of our defense on the break.

The good thing is, this hasn't really been a massive weakness of ours, even against teams like Palace, Leicester, or United who have exceptional pace up front. What certainly has been a weakness is timid play from our CBs, poor communication, and a failure to take charge and make challenges at the top of our box and attack the opposition with aggressive headers and tackles. Skriniar fixes all of those issues, and at only 25 he's got sell-on value which is going to be palatable to Levy. The guy is not going to be Vidic, and he will dive in and make some mistakes from time to time, but if we let Davinson and Skriniar grow together that's has as much potential of a quality CB pairing as we can do for the foreseeable future without spending massive money.
