It's a handful of ultras protesting against him because he at Hoffenheim and Red Bull at Leipzig are the only owners who circumvent the 50+1 supporter ownership rule in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen were factory workers' clubs originally and are still owned by those original companies so they also have dispensation from this rule. What’s this Dietmar Hopp business all about?
It looks like he is the sugar daddy who has funded Hoffenheims rise through the divisions. Opposition fans have been insulting him and yesterday Bayern fans did the same. The players played out the last ten minutes passing amongst themselves in protest at the abuse/banners ( which called him a son of a bitch )
Are they for real? The players I mean. They don’t do this for players getting racially abused, but a billionaire sugar daddy owner has his feelings hurt and they resort to this and then are proud they have ‘stood up to hate’?
Embarassing.
It's easy to protest against Hopp because he's the only individual who has a majority share in any top German club, as the other three are all owned by companies.
I thought the BBC explainer on this was decent.
