What’s this Dietmar Hopp business all about?

It looks like he is the sugar daddy who has funded Hoffenheims rise through the divisions. Opposition fans have been insulting him and yesterday Bayern fans did the same. The players played out the last ten minutes passing amongst themselves in protest at the abuse/banners ( which called him a son of a bitch )

Are they for real? The players I mean. They don’t do this for players getting racially abused, but a billionaire sugar daddy owner has his feelings hurt and they resort to this and then are proud they have ‘stood up to hate’?
Embarassing.
It's a handful of ultras protesting against him because he at Hoffenheim and Red Bull at Leipzig are the only owners who circumvent the 50+1 supporter ownership rule in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen were factory workers' clubs originally and are still owned by those original companies so they also have dispensation from this rule.

It's easy to protest against Hopp because he's the only individual who has a majority share in any top German club, as the other three are all owned by companies.

I thought the BBC explainer on this was decent.

Thanks for that.

As mentioned in that article, what a strange line to draw given the current climate. I admire the 50+1 rule they have over there, and their fans commitment to it. This response from the clubs and powers that be to this, is pretty ridiculous. Clubs like Hoffenheim and Leipzig, and to a lesser extent, City and Chelsea over here should be derided imo.

Yeah, seems like a really odd place to draw a line in the sand, and perhaps shows a real disconnect between the players and the fans really. When I saw the headlines about this, I expected that it had been a racist banner or something.

Imagine if games were stopped here every time someone said something mean about a clubs owner, it’d be pandemonium.

Bayern Munich are set to play all remaining home fixtures between now and 19th April behind closed dors as Bavaria prohibits all gatherings of over 1000 people.

Other football matches are looking set to be affected as well, I thik read Cologne will be behind closed doors as well. Would find it unfair if other teams were allowed to play in full stadiums, so wonder how long before the whole League shuts down, at least in terms of spectaors.

Think tonight against Leipzig maybe one of the last we see with...

So basically the German League will be the guinea pig for the rest of the lot. Let’s see how this will go. I’m looking forward watching some footy again

Going to be absolute pandemonium if one of the footballers ends up with Covid19

Who are we all supporting?! Let's all pick the same team and get matchday threads on the go ? Anyone know who the German equivalent of Spurs are? I'm hearing Schalke?

My old gaff, Monchengladbach. It's them or Dusseldorf, and the latter are 3rd from bottom, so 'gladbach it is.

The only family connection I have to Germany is my grandad being an officer in the British Army of the Rhine in the late 40s and early 50s in Dusseldorf.

But Fortuna are a bit shit....

I grew up on Rheindahlen Garrison in the 80's; My Dad was airforce. So I can kinda claim that Monchengladbach were a home team of sorts. Dusseldorf is only 30 mins away though, and one of my first matches was at the old stadium there, for Germany v England.

My first stint in Germany was in Hamburg, alas HSV have turned to crap despite the money they had. However I can’t bring myself to support any other German team.

I currently live near Mainz, and have seen them play a few times but meh.

Can’t bring myself to like Frankfurt, few too many Ultras for my liking, though you cannot fault the support they drum up in terms of numbers and noise at every game.

As for football returning full stop?! I’m torn. Yes Germany is doing much better at handling this than almost anywhere in Europe, but I’m not in favor.

That said I know I’m rather in a minority, at least amongst footballers around here who think having stopped football in the first place was unnecessary and feel as though Germany should completely get back to business because Coronavirus is now at a stage here where it’s no worse (in terms of mortality rates) than normal flu.

Not my opinion.

Bundesliga: Dynamo Dresden's entire squad in isolation just a week before restart.

Dortmund vs Schalke tonight. Shame no fans, but they will probably fill the stands with huge banners to cover the seats. Looking forward to seeing the games again. K-League was fine last weekend but hopefully this will be better.
