Yes you do a foul in he penalty area is a foul regardless where the ball is. If I recall Lehman did it to Keane after the ball was cleared and a penalty was given. Can't remember if he was sent off.
The ball wasn't in play. You can't give a foul if the ball isn't in play. It still could be given as a sending of though.

Wasn't it I thought He cleared it and then put his hands in Delkes face, poor streaming and didn't see it again on any TV channel.

maybe im wrong, i thought it was before a corner. Or at least like knocked out of play ofter one. Obviously I didn't think enough of the incident to actually care about where it happened.

It was after the corner. Valdes was annoyed as Dele grabbed his hand/ arm and once the ball was cleared played putty face with our lad.

Was it a red, yes, a penalty, yes, did we get it no, has Valdes been fortunate yes. Let's move on, it's not as crucial to us as other decisions that have gone against us at crucial times.

*EDIT: In fact the guys who should be more annnoyed are Borb's relegation rivals as it has given Boro an undue advantage. Unless Casillas is their reserve keeper

I wonder if the people upset about this feel the same way about vertonghen escaping a ban for doing much worse to Jay Rodriguez

So if dele alli decides he wants justice and walks up to valdes and shoves him in the face next time we play borough, in theory he should get off scot free. Even if it's right in front of the referee.

Such a lack of fucking consistency.

The point is, Dele didn't care a toss at the time, and I doubt he cares a toss now.

I don't particularly care as the game's gone now, but you have to wonder how Dembele gets a six game banacross two seasons and Valdes gets nothing for doing something which is very similar but actually worse?

Not sure how it was worse. Dembele went for the eye.

Its a fucking outrage. Valdes was clearly trying to bore his way through Alli's skull using a cunningly hidden drill bit in his glove. And the fact that he as heard several times asking Alli, "Is it safe"........"Is it safe" is only further proof that both participants are clearly involved to some degree or another something very sinister.

Or Valdes probably did it to get at a bogie. Meh.

You are right should of been both. But ultimately, I would get little pleasure on getting a penalty for an act which has nothing at all to do with football, like its not like we would of had an advantage if Valdes decided not to be an idiot.

Yes, and ultimately Valdes should get further disciplinary action for it. However, that ain't our problem.

Striking someone in the face (once, let alone twice in quick succession) is violent conduct and warrants a minimum of a three match ban. I don't see how there are any grounds to even debate this...it doesn't matter how much force there was in the contact or how little the victim makes of it. To not punish such an incident sets an awful precedent and effectively condones the behaviour. It's quite simply embarrassing that the FA has overlooked it, with such condemning footage available and the country's most renowned ref stating that it was a red car offence.

If you are happy to see such "nothing incidents" going on in football, perhaps you should be watching boxing instead.

I think we have a different definition of "striking" which is probably why we have different opinions on the matter.

It's annoying because of the inconsistency, not because it really has any impact on us.

If the FA are going to be so heavily on their high horse about 'arms raised' then they have to carry through with it whether it's highlighted on the TV or not.

As others have pointed out, Vertonghen got away with a similar one against Southampton, so you have to wonder why is the rule applied sometimes and not others? You just know that there will now be a similar incident next week and the whole thing will look comical if there's a red card that time but not this time.

As for those comparing it to Dembele on Costa....completely different things. Dembele clearly went in with an attempt on the eye and he was lucky he didn't connect otherwise he'd have deservedly got more than 6 weeks.

Lamela did a number on Lovren at WHL earlier in the season that was worse than this, so we've gotten the rub of the green when it comes to facegrabbing this season.

But the inconsistency is insane. Mane punching Carroll in the gut before Christmas was never mentioned anywhere, for some reason.

It doesn't matter what Costa did. What matters is what Dembele did.

I don't see how he did anything very different to Valdes, honestly. And Valdes did it twice!

And don't forget - we're not talking about comparable punishments here - its not like I'm questioning why Dembele got six games but Valdes only got four. Valdes has been given no punishment whatsoever. Nothing. Not even a warning as to his future conduct.

So again, how exactly is that fair or proportional.

I disagree that he "clearly" did anything other than raise his hand to Costa's (very punchable) face.
