I think the Gooner (!) who said we were a Sanchez and Özil away from winning the title was bang on.

Sanchez defiantly not sure about Ozil he is unreliable.

Question is if we sell a few players like Carroll, Wimmer and Fazio will we really back Poch to go to that next level. Imagine a Isco or Lacazette signing, won't happen but that would make us future Prem contenders.

If we can afford the wages, yeah!

Turned it around results wise but lets be honest with each other, the football is still laregely turgid AVB stuff. This negative football infuriates me. We have a good squad. Lets use it to the best of its abilities please.

Also, there is zero chance this thread would have been made if we let one in yeaterday after they went down to 10 men like it looked.
Just no

AVB's default was to maintain possession, wear the opposition down and win one - nil. Any other victory scoreline was incidental. Going behind was not an option. When we did he found it hard to switch the momentum from midfield dominated screw tightening to relentless pressure to turn the game around.

Pochettino's default is to press from the front and turn the oppositions attacks against themselves with rapid transition of play putting us on the front foot before the oppos have time to settle back into defensive shape. I have heard a lot of talk about Southampton and statistics recently; what I know from watching their games was that when Poch was in charge, by utilising this system, they attacked teams in waves - even when they were under pressure themselves.

The reason we are seeing more patient midfield play is that oppos realised he had translated what he was doing at Southampton to us, only we had better players. So they have started playing far more defensively. With all respect to Southampton, for once, very few teams, even lower league ones, were setting out to play ultra-defensively, go for a draw and hope for a break-away goal win, against them. They will do that to us. It is very hard to press oppos and transition play immediately when they sit deep and their default out ball is to hit long for a loan striker and hope he gets a lucky break. So Poch has had to adjust his tactics since joining us. Particularly, he has had to adjust to teams that sit deep and look to hit a loan striker.

You can see the difference when we play a good team who sets out to play - like when Citeh came to the Lane. Poch was able to play to his default, which was to press Citeh at the back and hit them quick.

Yep what I would say is that at our worst we start to look like an AVB side.

Yeah, that's true enough.

The problem is, some folk are confusing cause and effect.

It's causing discombobulation among the rabble :)

I'll be blunt I hated AVB never felt so bored of us at that time, it was like having an accountant running the team. For me our worst manager, if we ain't winning trophies I at least expect entertainment, even George Graham was exciting compared to AVB.

Bale saved that period otherwise going to WHL would have felt like a chore. Going from Redknapp to AVB was like Skydiving into a physics lecture.

I'll be blunt, too. I really tried to see what AVB was doing. I stuck up for him. I pointed to his winning record in Portugal. I believed he had been shafted by the players at Chelsea (well, because they are a vile bunch in a vile club). I want this club to be a winning club again - and if that meant a bit of turgidity on the way, with excitement added as an ingredient after the winning started, which was the game he talked, well I could accept that. When it became apparent that that was all there was and it wasn't making us more competitive against the top teams despite the win ratio, and ultimately, when he put out that shocking team against Liverpool and then refused to compromise his system, it was clear that he was a bit of a Toom Tabbard (there's one for buffs of Scottish history...BC might get it :) ). In retrospect, what is most damning about AVB is that he talked the talk about the youth and then ring-fenced the 1st team squad and excluded the yoot from it. Compare that with Poch's approach of bringing some in every so often to train with the 1st team squad and giving game time!

TBF, Levy has been trying out different types of manager to see if one would compliment the work with the youth set-up, etc., and work and fight to make us competitive above our weight while he (Levy) developed the infrastructure that would push up among them in terms of stadium, facilities and, hopefully, revenues, and with viable product from the yoot. Think we have finally got the one who will stick. When I decided that is probably different and earlier than some.

The strongest testament I give to the guy is our goal difference. We absolutely never get pasted under him. +20 already this season, that's +40 for the season tbh and we haven't even played that well.

In years gone by I remember our goal difference being +/-1 even at year end...

Except in the last game of the season at an already relegated team...

He's certainly not beyond criticism. I thought he was running us into the ground last season, and that proved to be the case. This season we look like we're playing within ourselves. Almost as if we're trying not to run ourselves into the ground by the end of the season.

Will he never learn?!

Seriously though, our football has looked quite plodding, but we look incredibly difficult to break down, and when our attackers have their brains switched on we're a match for anyone.

I think he's doing a great job with what he has available, and clearly the players love being at the club. Even if we end up 5th or 6th Levy should recognise that he has a top manager in charge, and unless we start spending mega bucks we won't punch much higher.

Under AVB, we came back from being behind to draw or win 15 times.

If being negative means we win 4-1 let's hope we are negative until the end of the season !
