The thing is you know it will be something like this:

Hart

Jones
Jagielka
Cahill
Gibbs

Wilshere
Henderson

Walcott
Milner
Oxlade Chamberlain

Rooney,

I believe that he has his favourites and sticks with them regardless of form.

I'm not sure that's entirely fair. Rooney seems untouchable, but Hodgson has given a lot of young players a chance. He's often been quite hampered by injuries as well.

He gives youth a chance when there's nothing to play for but in the finals he'll stick with the players that strolled through the simple group stage

Agree that as far as attacking options go it's not obvious any more how to line up. A year ago we were suited to a 4-3-3, with Sturridge and Wellbeck and Sterling. Now Sterling has dropped his level and the other two have injury problems I'm not sure we have the players for that system any more.

A Kane and Vardy partnership could be devasting.

Woy will never drop Rooney though, so you'd have to play a midfield diamond with Rooney at the point. Could work, but what about Alli?

The only position I feel England is properly well stocked in ATM is in goal. Far from an embarrassment of riches.

I guess we'll see but I think people forget that In the World cup he started with Welbeck, Sturridge, Rooney and Sterling which was quite an attacking formation. And added Ross Barkley as a sub.

Guess I'm too cynical when it comes to England squads but with Hodgson in charge I think there's more chance of seeing Milner / Lingard starting in midfield than seeing Dier / Alli even if that does sound crazy to all of us

Ok, maybe I overstretched it.

But

Very strong goalie options.
Stones is very good
FBs are very very good

Barkley, Alli and Dier is a super strong engine room.

Vardy and Kane are excellent strikers

Trippier might be in for a shout?

I think Kane and Vardy Could be a good pairing. If one of them gets a yard of space it's a goal.

And i would consider playing Rooney as a midfielder. Barkley is a certain starter as well.

If I were England boss I probably would have played 2-2-6.

That's just small-club paranoia messing with you. No way will he not start at least one Spurs player.

At least there may be a small case to start Rooney as he is starting to play well although you would imagine Woy would start him regardless of form.

What about CHILWELL?

Good players to choose from, lots to ignore. No way does Rooney deserve a starting role. Kane and Vardy all day long.

Rooney off the bench.

Sterling impossible to ignore if fit.

Can't agree with the OP here. Goalies are strong, that's for sure. There are some good options in the attack too with the likes of Kane, Vardy, Alli and Barkley. Even Rooney is still worth taking, whether he should start is the question. The midfield and defence concerns me though.

Henderson's a solid player but needs to get back in the swing of things. Milner is Joe Average, will put a shift in but you're not getting anything special. Delph gets less games these days since he sold out. Dier is well worth a shout but he's only effective in the way we like to play. He drops in as a 3rd CB whilst the full backs push high. If that's the style Hodgson wants to adapt then go for it, if not then Dier isn't going to work as well. There are some decent options in attacking midfield though but trying to fit the likes of Alli and Barkley in together will be hard. Depends on how many/who he plays up top.

At the back is still an issue. I like Stones but he's being overhyped. He's very good for his age but still naive and is year or two away from being as good as people claim he is now. Smalling has done well and both Cahill and Jagielka will be around there. Decent options but they don't blow me away.

The full backs is another question. On merit Rose and possibly Trippier deserve a call up. I'll tell you now that Woy will pick Clyne, Walker, Baines and either Gibbs or Bertrand. Walker and Clyne are much of a muchness. I prefer Walker but neither have ever shown much in an England shirt. Gibbs and Bertrand are just not worth a call up, very overrated.

If everyone was fit I'd go with something like:

Hart

Clyne Smalling Stones Shaw

Dier Henderson

Sterling Kane Alli

Vardy
Whilst Barkley has been excellent, Alli has been better, and England will need a midfielder who can put his foot on it which is why I'd put Henderson in alongside Dier.

I do wonder if it might be a more balanced team if you chose either Vardy or Kane and then perhaps you could put Barkley in there, but I reckon the above would work.
