Sorry I cannot agree at all, Rooney is the national captain and due to that fact will 100% start every game if he is fit

No one in there right mind leaves there top scorer on the bench

Kane and vardy will fight out to play along side him, mostly likely one will play wide

Hasn't Rooney only scored the 1 goal in tournaments?

Based on that, he's eminently droppable due to poor form and negligible goal return.

I'd drop him in a heartbeat.

He has six actually. 4 in 2004, one in 2012 and one in 2014. Only one in WCs.

I'd still drop him though.

The issue with England and the form argument above, is that for me Hodgson hasn't imposed any sort of 'style' or 'system' or 'approach' at all.

It's all very random, and seems largely to be based on Rooney scoring and everyone else doing not very much. Whilst our results in qualifying were good, our opponents were fucking awful, and I suspect when we have to step it up to play some decent opposition we'll just fall apart again.

I do think it's more complicated than just picking the form club players. The England manager should be trying to form a unit that plays consistently, so if someone is playing well for their club but doesn't fit that system then fair enough.

But there's no evidence of Hodgson really doing that, so I don't see why Rooney should necessarily be picked.

Of course what he should do is pick the team with the most high-performing English players, and then fit some other players around that....:)

???

Walker ??? ??? Rose

Dier ???

??? Alli ???

Kane
Alli has barely played CM all season and more recently moved out to LW and I think we will certainly see him in CM

The big problem we have with England is that we only ever pick 'glory' players and not a 'team'.

Defenders are picked on who has scored a flash goal that month rather than who can defend (Clyne got in after scoring against scum, Lescott got in after scoring 3 headers in a week, etc...).

Most of the England games I've seen over the last year have been filled with players who do not play as part of a team and hog the ball looking for their own glory (Barkley, Sterling, Walcott) now this works fine against the rubbish we face in qualifying as you get space, time and plenty of chances but in the ko section of the Euros against half decent teams we'd get ripped apart

Hart
Walker Smalling Stones Gibbs
Dier Henderson
Sturridge Kane Sterling
Vardy
A combo of young hard working players with some experience and a potent attack.

Impact subs: Alli / Barkley / Oxlade Chamberlain / dare I say Walcott?
Not too concerned about playing old guard players.

Gibbs? Sturridge? Neither has done enough this season to deserve to be in there.

Agreed, Rose has earned a call up ahead of Gibbs, but it'll likely be Baines.
I think Sturridge, if he can make the remainder of the season fully fit, is definitely worth a squad place at the very least, his quality is undeniable

I hear you, but if fit by the time of the tournament I'd like to see Sturridge in the team, he's a quality player. Gibbs? I just think he has that knack of doing a good defensive job and in all honesty I trust him more than I trust Shaw or Baines. Rose and Shaw are more wing backs than full backs for me, so it depends on the style of play we intend to use. I was thinking of a solid back four, two disciplined midfielders and then pace and power in the front four.

I'd drop Rooney without a second thought, however he'll "star" in the pre-tournament advertising for a load of merchandising and will therefore be shoehorned into the team.

The adverts at the last world cup with him alongside Messi, Ronaldo etc were totally emabrresing

If Roy has any sense he'll just load up on as many Spurs and leciester players as he can and let them so what they do. Player reputations have never gotten England anywhere since euro 96

Hart
Walker
?
?
Rose
Dier
Ali
Mason
Drinkwater
Vardy
Kane

I may actually be interested then, but I'm sure he'll roll out Rooney and as many Liverpool and Arsenal players that are English

Mason doesn't really deserve a call-up. Depending on opposition, I'd be picking a midfield 3 from Dier, Drinkwater, Alli and Barkley with Vardy and some other pacy mofo (Walcott, even Deeney) either side of Kane. You could just as easily have Butland or Forster in goal (although Hart is class and would be the obvious choice for captain). The only position I have no idea about is CB - Smalling's having a good season despite United's woes isn't he?

That wouldn't make sense unless Roy can get them really well drilled in training. Spurs and Leicester play in totally different ways, each designed to work the best for their individual talents. Spurs press, work hard and control possession. Leicester sit deep, concede possession and hit on the counter.

We can talk about the players all day, but the chance of success in the Euros will lie with the manager.

I like Hodgson but he's not shown himself to be a top class manager like Pochettino yet. Pochettino makes the team greater than the sum of its parts and Tottenhams parts are good without being world class. England similarly have a several very good players but few with the talent of the German, Spanish, French, Belgian players.

We need to have a specific game plan and way of playing drilled like Spurs and Leicester do, and I've yet to see Hodgson do that so far. What's our identity? What's our style of play? I'm cautiously optimistic that he can do something, but I'm not holding my breath...

England have no style. Just a bunch of useless overhyped players that play for United,.Liverpool and Arsenal

I wouldn't say England have an 'embarrassment of riches', but Hodgson will have a tough job picking 4 strikers out of Rooney, Kane, Sturridge (if fit), Welbeck and Vardy.

In the end, I think he'll have to pick 2 out of Sturridge, Welbeck and Vardy. It's tough because Sturridge is the best striker out of those 3, but Welbeck has a great England record and a good work-rate, but then Vardy will probably be top-scorer in the PL.

If it were up to me, I'd go with Sturridge and Vardy, as Vardy has the same high work-rate as Welbeck and you can't really leave the top PL scorer out of the squad.

Welbeck would have to score double figures between now and the end of the season to even be considered for the Euros IMO. But then, this is Woy...

And considering the most goals he's ever got in a season is twelve.....
