England squad, embarrassment of riches

Looking forward to 2016 Euro squad, we seem to have an embarrassment of riches, mainly young talent.

Goalkeeper. Joe Hart is the obvious choice but Butland is playing great, Forster is showing his class and Foster is playing really well too.

At right back, Walker is sure to go and Clyne too, but don't rule out Trippier with the way he's playing now. Chambers can also play there or CB.

At left back, Luke Shaw, the original first choice will possibly be back by then. Then we have Baines, Gibbs (not sure why) and of course Danny Rose who's played great this season.

At CB, Stones is amazing, Cahill and Jagielka both solid and experienced, Chambers versatile and Smalling very decent. Dier, who'll definitely go as a midfielder is great in defence too.

In CM we have serious strength. Dier, Barkley, Alli, Henderson, Lallana and possibly a run from Mason, Shelvey or Delph all arguing it out for three positions.

Up front. Rooney, Kane and Vardy are certain to go and probably all start. But who will join them who can play wide? Sterling surely, Oxlade-Chamberlain, probably Sturridge, maybe Walcott. With Townsend playing regularly and the way he's played for England before, don't rule him out!

That's a very very decent bunch of options and with only Rooney and Baines from the old guard.

Very exciting!

Ah the old England cycle.

  • Step 1. Play shit in a major tournament
  • Step 2 - get rid of some old players and filter in some youth
  • Step 3 - smash all of Europe's best goat farmers in qualifying
  • Step 4 - pre tournament hype - "hang on, we aren't that bad, we could actually win this thing".
  • Step 5 - play shit in major tournament.

I'm not sure about an embarrassment of riches, but we've got some good players now. I might be biased, but from an England perspective I think Hodgson needs to build his side around the Tottenham players - Walker, Dier, Rose, Alli, Kane - as that togetherness and cohesion should really benefit the side. Add in Vardy, Sterling or Rooney, and we'll be tough to beat.

There's trying to be optimistic and then there's just being plain crazy. Anybody who's seen a fair few games this year wouldn't think you could rely on Stones & Jagielka let alone state we have serious strength in midfield and include Llalana, Henderson, Mason, Shelvy & Delph.

If it's picked right we could have a very solid team who on its day can compete but we all know that it won't be picked right and it'll be packed with showponys and players who are only interested in their own glory rather than the team (Barkley, Sterling, Walcott, etc...)

That's a reach, embarrassment of riches lol but we have some good players now, much better options then precious years.

Just don't think we have the right manager.

Wrong man in charge, I think the squad is average, lots of options but average. Stones is still learning and going through a tough spell, Chambers is a joke surely, Henderson, Shelvey, Walcott not been great, Ox can't get a game, to name a few.

The microcosm of this is Rooney himself

Embarrassment of riches is certainly a stretch. Mentioning the likes of Chambers is just odd.

But this is the most excited about an international tournament from an England perspective I have been in a long time.

I don't think we are going to win it or anything but there seems to be a more down to earth characteristic to the likes of Alli, Kane, Barkley, Stones and some of the others than what we previously had to endure.

My country or not it was almost impossible to support the likes of Terry.

I think the glaring hole in the England squad is a proper CAM, in the mould of Eriksen, Ozil, Silva etc. Hopefully Alli can fill that role this summer and maybe Pritchard long term.

Chambers shouldn't be anywhere near the England squad, the guy is dog shit. He struggled against San Marino for fucks sake. SAN FUCKING MARINO.

Saying that, Hodgson is in charge so he'll probably be made vice-captain.

My england team would be

Hart, Butland, Forster
Clyne, Walker, Smalling, Stones,Cahill, Jags, Bertrand, Baines
Dier, Alli, Hendo, Walcott, Sterling, Barkley, Delph, Oxlade
Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Sturridge(Welbeck if sturridge unfit)

My starting 11 and it has been since before we even played france tbh

Hart
Walker, Smalling, Stones, Bertrand
Dier
Hendo Alli
Sterling
Rooney, Kane

In a diamond, I've had to put rooney in over vardy because he's captain basically. We don't have a lot of wingers, So I've included ox who I think is pretty crap tbh, hopefully Aaron Lennon continues his great form and gets in.

YoI missed the part about the press building up to slaughter a sacrificial player or 2 to sell papers - which is what's worrying me about so many of our young players likely to be in the England camp

Does walker usually play? I thought the old palace guy...at Liverpool (clyne?) was Roy's boy. I sometimes watch the finals these days but can't be arsed with watching qualifiers..

I think England has some very decent talent but don't think it's a team of world class players by any means or anywhere near an embarrassing array of riches.

We've always had a decent stick of players.

Kane is a special talent.
Rooney was a special talent.
Dier and Alli have great potential.

We're in decent shape but not an embarrassment of riches for me.

I think we should just play the best side we can, that way the best youngsters have a chance of going further into the tournament. Saying that I agree with most of your side, but Wallcott will be 27 by the time the Euros comes round so he's not a youngster any more - I'd play Vardy instead. And Hart instead of Butland.

The thing is you know it will be something like this:

Hart

Jones
Jagielka
Cahill
Gibbs

Wilshere
Henderson

Walcott
Milner
Oxlade Chamberlain

Rooney,

I believe that he has his favourites and sticks with them regardless of form.
