I honestly think we're biding our time. Any signings we make now aren't realistically going to be ready to go straight into our side in any case until after the international break which comes in the first week of September.

This means we're content to concentrate on our outgoings for now, because whether we sign another two players or not, we desparately need to shift 5 or so no matter waht. This has proven difficult so far because a number of them are digging their heels in as they think they're in Poch's plans, but once the first two squads of the season are announced and a number of them don't even make the bench on either occasion, then they'll know where they stand and be happier to leave

At that point Levy will swing into action and complete the two we're chasing. MM and MS.
Yes and my knickerless girlfriend climbs trees and her name is Teresa Green.!

.

He can take as long as he wants this time, as long as he backs the manager with one or two significant signings before the window shuts. If he doesn't deliver at all, then by all means criticise the board.

yup but recognising that we cannot tell a player to come to us - so if Valencia offer MM enough money that he prefers to stay in the surroundings he knows, there is not a Levy can do. There are not a lot of quality CB's around (and I wasnt aware of MM before we had itk) so there m,ay not be a lot of alternatives that Poch wants and who are available.

Dier looked a good (even if he is not that experienced) CB and if we want the exotic names - id Caneo as a striker (or do I mean di Kaneo, never could spell !) might fit the bill

My god there are some whiney idiots in here today. It's actually making want to do some work!

Imagine what it'll be like if we only pick up 2 points in our first two games. But we're Spurs fans, we wouldn't be Spurs fans if we didn't whinge all the time ;)

Oh my god! Call 020 8394 8300

Lol - same arguments every year all based on chinese whispers coming out of the club. No one knows what's really going on so revert to stereo-types.

Levy - Tight fisted, not backing the manager, no signings until deadline day costs us (insert points total)
Pochetino - Not backed by the manager, why didn't we sign all his targets, whats the point bringing him in if we do'nt back him.
Signings we've made - they are Levy signings and from the committee. Poch wanted Shaw and Boruc but Levy signed Davies and Vorm cos they were cheap.

I'll reserve judgement we have a good squad some settled players and a decent pre season. Anyone we sign from here on is a bonus...

For me the transfer should be a formality for a Club our size, with the aspirations the Chairman, Board and new Coach has. For such an important position as the CB role is, if the Club are dithering about spending another million or two it really is showing a lack of commitment.

Last season Levy threw thirty million at a player in a position where we had cover, be it planning for the future or present. This off season it appears that Poch wants Dawson out, Kaboul has never played a full season (or even half a one) since he has returned and the one true CB that we have is yet to start a game and sign a supposed new contract. And yet the Club according to the latest ITK are trying to squeeze the last drop out of a deal to fill a position that is imperative.

Oh, for those heady days when Levy would spend fifteen million on this player here, or thirty million on that player there without batting an eyelid. The aberration of a deadline day signing of a Nelsen or Saha are already giving me nightmares.
Are you privy to the alleged negotiations?

If he was the second coming of the players you mentioned we wouldn't be buying him. RM or Barcelona would've snapped him up. Or Chelsea would have him loaned out in the dutch league somewhere.

How much did you know about Modric before we bought him?

The thing is we can't compete with buying in the established big name stars. We have to unearth a gem and I put my faith in our scouts, Baldini and manager to do that job for me. Clearly MM is wanted by the manager who has managed in Spain, clearly knows his capabilities and is from the same country as MM. That's good enough for me.

I just hope Poch isn't too bothered if we lose out on him.

I agree with the if the manager wants him aspect of your post. My reference to the world class defenders is more tongue in cheek at the reactions of some on here to the thought of a player (I'd bet most didnt know that much about) not coming.

Hopefully - it's asking a lot though. I consider myself at the slightly less optimistic end of the scale (some would say 'realistic') but I think if I'm totally honest with myself, a par finish this year would be about 6th or 7th.

I don't think we can realistically expect (we may do, but it's unlikely IMO) to finish above any of Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Liverpool or Utd.

I think we have a better squad than Everton, but it's much of a muchness and I think they're more settled than we are, so you can take your pick really.

If we finish:
Below that - it will be a real shame, but we can take a view as to how much of an issue it is depending on circumstances and luck/injuries

At that - as long as it seems we're progressing, that young players are improving and that there's a clear plan, then I think I'll be happy

Above that - all the better for it, but the elements such as the improvement and incorporation of young players will still be vital

Agree with pretty much all of this. I expect the title to be between Ars, Che and MC and then I think we'll come third in the race for 4th place. MM & MS may make a difference in that, MM especially and despite not knowing who he was a month ago, I'd be a little disappointed if we didn't get him now, although I'm very happy with the Dier signing.

Would almost be happy with 6th for the coming season if progress was being made, we played some attractive Spursy football and didn't take a battering off the top 4 teams like last season. Throw in a decent cup run or two and potentially this time next year we might only be looking for a couple of marquee type signings to really improve the first team, rather than another overhaul.

*sighs*
We get shiny new toys if we throw out the old toys.
It's a process.
There's a long time between now and deadline day.

We all know the arguments if players don't get signed, why not vent on the other side instead of just presuming the worst?
At least the squad is balanced, if bloated.

Feeling very downbeat about Spurs right now. Every team around us has strengthened. Davis and Vorm are good signings but will not make a significant difference.

Pochettino will though, so some people really need to calm down.

We arn't in a position to go out and pay top premiums to get all our business done early - not to mention it sets a poor precedent in terms of our image for future business. If we're throwing around money left, right and center meeting asking prices without any negotiation every window you think that wouldn't go unnoticed!?

We don't have a bottomless pit, like City or Chelsea, or such turnover like United that these things don't matter as much.

We have a strategy that has served us very well and for the most part has allowed us to punch above our weight in recent years.

It won't always work and sometimes it will frustrate but in the end it's procured a lot more success than failure.

On previous occasions you're absolutely right (Like when Levy farted around with Moutinho when it was blatantly obvious we needed him and Dembele in early to replace Modric) but in this moment the squad is not in urgent need of bodies. We've brought in Davies and Vorm relatively early and we need a CB of course but i'm sure Kaboul and Vertonghen will be perfectly fine for the first few games of the season. It's not like Dawson and Nelson are our only centre halves.

He can take as long as he wants this time, as long as he backs the manager with one or two significant signings before the window shuts. If he doesn't deliver at all, then by all means criticise the board.

I agree with you. But up to a point. The point I was making was that it's not only getting in the 'right' players - it's also the timing of bringing them in. For example, if the coach says he must have Muscacchio or a new starting centre back & the Club fails to deliver prior to the start of the season and that costs the team points in the early going then has not that delay hurt our final standing? It's not just bringing in a player on day one and playing him on day two. A player needs to develop an understanding with his team-mates.

Penny-wise, pound-foolish may be an apt saying in this case...

I remember all the fuss and bother leading up to Soldado signing.

You think we would have learnt.

fuck the shiny new toy, I'd settle for a fit Kyle Walker....now that would be good.

The Club has a tradition of penny-pinching at the beginning of the season & leaving important signings until late. I wonder how many points are lost at the beginning of the year because the team is not yet ready.

Getting into the top four seems to be the intent of this club. But how serious is this intent if a spot in the top four is continually missed because of a lack of a settled team at the beginning of the year?

Fool me once - shame on you. Fool me twice - shame on me.

Points may be lost unnecessarily at the start of the season because of last minute signings. If this 'habit' continues year on year then it costs the club money. A lot of money. And a spot in the Champions League. Shouldn't smart people learn from their mistakes?

What does this say about the decision-making of the individuals that run Tottenham Hotspur?
You may recall that the first twelve games or so in the past two seasons we started very well points wise, which therefore rubbishes your argument.

It would be interesting (if someone has the time) to note how many points the Club gained in its first three PL matches over the past five seasons or so - and against what opposition...

I would just like to refer to my first ever post on SC:

Sorry guys, I do not know if I am in the right place but I was looking for the Depression Society Forum and it seems like I have found the right place. Can anyone confirm? Thanks. :banghead:

Wow. Things really do go full circle.

It's great to see people are optimistic for Poch (as am I), but honestly, people are making it out as if he is going to transform every single player who has struggled with us into a world beater.
