Interesting post from one of the lads on FTL

This evening I went for a pizza at Pizza East in London's trendy Notting Hill. As I was paying I noticed Baldini lurking around waiting for a table, so I said he could have mine.

Anyway, I asked if he was getting us a striker or any other signings. He said yes, "2 or 3 before end of August". What a surprise.

I then said thank god Sherwood was gone. He laughed and said he isn't a manager, but might be in the future. Surprisingly diplomatic.

Then said Lamela is going to tear it up this season. He said he's surprised when he doesn't score in games because he's that good. Also said "they" ruined him last year, because he was very young, shy and in a new country. This season things will be different.

Finally, said he thought we "finally" have a manager now in Poch. Seemed very encouraged by him
Thanks for passing on, but i find that incredibly hard to believe.

I actually think that is the price for a quality CB now. There's a serious lack of quality in that position currently. If I had the choice I'd much rather spend that and therefore sort our defence than spend it on another attacking player.

But what do you mean by a 'quality' CB? From what I've seen of Lovren, he strikes me as being good, but not top drawer.

Don't mind waiting until nearer the deadline for a LW or a CM if needed, but IMO a new centre back needs to be in place before the start of the season. A solid, settled defence is vital if we're to get off to a good start.

Going for a forward later on would make sense anyway as Poch will probably really want to assess the strength of Soldado, Ade and Kane... and he might view that as enough.

We'll probably play the long game over Schneiderlin, that won't get done quickly if it ends up getting done at all, fingers crossed.

But yeah, a CB needs addressed the most urgently.

Personally I rate him. He's obviously not the level of a Kompany. Quality in what I was talking were likes of Manolas, Schar. A step up in terms of what we have. Top drawer are very rare currently, only think there's 3/4 in whole of PL.

Our top priority is definitely a CB.

I dont think they need to be 'world class' or even a big name, just somebody who has a malleable style of play, a good football brain, and premier league experience.

Without trying to throw names around with no real substance, my #1 realistic choice would be Matija Nastasic...

Liverpool have paid £40m for Lovren and Sakho. Absolute madness, in genuinely not sure i would want either as my main CB

Doesn't this depend on Kaboul's fitness? If he gets back to even 90% of what he was in 2011-12 (and allowing for the Ledley factor) he's better than any of the names we've been linked with.

A solid, settled defence doesn't depend on individuals. Remember, we were as solid in 2005-06 as we've ever been, but the only member of our line-up then that would get picked today is Ledley.

I'm still not writing off Pochettino being completely ok with his options in midfield and attack.
Defence I'd be stunned. We needed a CB in before season started, I wonder if Moreno was the aim and now it's back to drawing board.

As good as Lovren is, he's never convinced me he's a 20m defender. For that you expect someone of the highest level, no errors, no bullshit. I don't think you get that with him. The way Soldado mugged him for the equilizer at the Lane last year was ridiculous. I'm sure he did exactly the same in the Brazil game too, but wasn't punished.

Good signing for them, but for a club with limited finance, I'm glad we avoided it. Vertonghen/Kaboul/Vlad are good enough options if they remain fit. Really the only reason we're looking for a CB is because of injury, not because of a lack of quality.

There was more emphasis on defending back then though wasn't there? Full backs were proper defenders not what we have today were their attacking contribution is massive for most teams. Teams generally attack more and take more risks in their play these days.

Agree regarding Kaboul...when fully fit he's miles better than what we're being linked with.

The only thing I'd say there is that 30 of the goals we conceded last season—well over 50%—came in just seven games. For the other 31, we were pretty sound.

That is a huge reason imo.

Swansea linked with a move for Naughton tonight. If any mileage in that it would fuel the speculation regarding Richards, who could cover RB and CB, unless of course Poch intends to keep Fredericks in and around the first team.

Aye, but our whole problem is matching & attempting to overcome the teams that scored for fun against us. We'll do as well as ever against the lesser teams, that's the way this league is these days...

But, anyway...

Yeah I get that, but also need to take into consideration the change in style under Pochettino can make a team susceptible. We need CBs who are very comfortable on the ball, with errors cut to a premium. My concern entirely resides from fact I can't be convinced Kaboul and Chiriches are going to be available for the majority of games. If that was assured I'd be fine with things as are tbh.

Richards is fucking crap.. we should be over Nastasic if we are signing somebody from City.
Sick and tired of signing clumsy defenders with no intelligence; get rid of Rose, Dawson and Kaboul.

True; a centre back at that price? That's just not the market we operate in.

Has there ever been an (anti) fire sale like we're seeing with this Southampton squad before? They're all desperate to leave and yet the chairman is managing to hold out for silly money.

Yes they were a decent side last season, but there's no way that team was/is worth >£100m.
