......................Many a player has looked good for 1 year in the EPL and then gone on to be ok or average, usually after joining a bigger club actually.

......................................

Hi. This is my first post so I don't want to start with an argument!

But it seems to me that this sort of idea is one that comes from fans, whereas coaches, especially those of the calibre and experience of AVB and Baldini, should be able to look at a player and understand enough about their strengths and weaknesses to have a pretty good idea whether the player is a flash-in-the-pan or has genuine qualities that good coaching can develop further.

If paying tens of millions for players is as much of a punt for them as it would be for us in their job, why on earth are coaches, scouts and managers paid the salaries they are?

Benefits of a committee, one may get sucked in by hype, but 2 or 3?

AVB is what, 35?
He's never experienced a 2nd season at a club and what history does he have for talent spotting?

You're forgetting a pretty crucial point here. They set a fee of 18 million for Liverpool and stuck to it, they didn't budge an inch. They sold him a year later to City when he had a year less on his contract and got another year service out of him on the pitch.

World of difference that, to dropping their price at the end of that respective window - which they certainly didn't do.

I agree, but this was when Villa had a bit of cash and a bit of a decent team (just missed out on 5th around that time if I'm not mistaken and were 4th for large periods).

Then the downturn happened and Lerner started selling everyone.

Agree. They aren't going to announce a specific price and then backtrack, a really weak future precedent they'd be setting.

We might offset it a little the way we intend to structure the deal, other than that Villa won't be rolling over.
Thank you!
Whether it's with add-ons or not, they'll get near enough as makes no difference to £25m, imo.

They should just get MUG tattooed onto their faces if they don't. It's like us with Modric. It was £40m to even get DL to pick up the phone for any prem team. Net result, the two main suitors here - yanited and chel$ea - just didn't bother again. Then RM said we'd pay no more than £25m or whatever. They ended up finally ponying up comfortably north of £30m.

Once you make a public stand, it's suicidal to back down. Even RM's attempts at unsettling Bale this summer have been very run of the mill stuff. Just going through the motions really. It would almost be poor form not to at least make the cursory noises. Had we buckled easily last summer, they'd be battering us properly right now. It all matters.

I would hope AvB can discern exactly what strengths and weakness, attributes and skills a player brings to the party. If he cant judge this how exactly is he picking his side every week?

And I would hope he knows exactly what skillsets we are looking for to complete our squad. And that our targets reflect this.

God point, which is presumably why bringing in Baldini was a good move and one which AVB apparently was very much in favour of.

Nevertheless, I'd say AVB's experience of working day-to-day with some very good players for many years now has taught him a thing or two beyond what is obvious from the terraces wouldn't you?

Agreed. But in terms of their prized assets, they've always adopted a tough stance.

No1 if Benteke was our player we would ,be asking for 25 mil
No 2 We could offer Chelsea 20/25 for Lukaku, who think is a better player , plus younger,
No3 We could offer Naughton, livermore, plus cash.
N4 If Chelsea do buy Suarez, Pool could come in and blow us out of the water , for Benteke,
No 5 Put into perspective 25mil would probably buy us , Morata, Rebic, and Jese .

And rightly so too!! As has been said on here recently, if Benteke was with us & had just had a season like last season, we'd be saying we want £30m+, so why should Villa be any different? They're well within their rights to ask for whatever they deem necessary.

Welcome aboard, I tend to agree with you there seems to be this idea that the lower leagues and retirement homes are full of Premier league one season wonders but I think this is a bit of an urban myth, how common is it that someone comes in and has a season like that then fails, it doesn't happen very often at all.

Simple, does AVB and co believe benteke could take us to the next level?

If yes, then enquire

After enquiring and finding out the price,

AVB and co will look at other options in the current market and weigh up whether the money spent on benteke could be spent elsewhere on one/two/three players and make a judgement call which would be more beneficial to spurs and our short term and long term goals!!

If AVB and co have decide benteke is the way forward then I for one am happy to give my approval (my approval = F All but hey!!)

let's face it, they will have ALL the info on all current possibilities we may have.

I haven't watched a great deal of Benteke but he comes accross as a big lumbering forward IMO and not what we need.
Dare I say it, I think we need someone a bit more like Torres (with confidence) maybe.

I haven't seen much either but over on Villatalk they compared him closer to Drogba than Lukaku. Whether that's just a Villa fans biased view or an honest opinion, who knows.

Villa fans on Villatalk are saying that Benteke shouldn't want to come to us as realistically they will have a better side than us in two years. Can someone please explain the logic of that to me?

There was a guy on there yesterday that said none of our players are good enough for them in a trade except from bale. When someone pulled him up saying Sandro, Dembele etc he said no as we wouldnt offer them anyway so when Siggi was mentioned he flat out said if we offered him and he's not good enough for us then he's not good enough for the mighty Villa.
