Coz he is to be blamed

The bloke obviously fancy himself to be some sort of a transfer genius

He wants to buy low i.e Damiao 15m and sell high Modric 40m and expect the respective clubs to acquiesce to him
He doesn't want to sell Modric, so he can set whatever price he wants. If Madrid want the player, they should expect to pay that price.

Can we overhaul the squad if no-one's buying?

Can we get people in if we don't have the money to spend?

We've got to have money in the left hand to spend it with the right hand, no?
Don't we keep getting told that the in-comings are not dependent on the 'Modric money'?

An interesting post by Jacob on COYS (not for the Read Only, though (y) ) in reply to a comment passed on from JJetset on Twitter:

JJ is not wrong. We do not make things easy for ourselves in the transfer market. You can sugar coat it how you like but the club actually have people planted on this board to try and calm everybody down. Truth is there are certain clubs who refuse to deal with us and after the Ade transfer is done I am sure there will be one more to add to the list.

Rondon went for €10
de Jong went for €12
Mandzukic went for €13
Das Bost went for €9
Joselu for €6
Ola John €9
Castagninos €6

Thanks for the praise. :) Good to see it's not all doom and gloom and blame and pointy fingers.

If we did a poll - before the Euros - that said "if we signed one of these as our main strikers would you be happy?", do you think the masses would be have been happy? I'm not so sure.

(To be fair, I reckon I knew two of them - de Jong and Mandzukic)

From seeing some opinions on here, unless we sign one of Leandro, Llorente, Hulk or Falcao, then people won't be happy. Which is why I spoke of Levy not being able to win.

But hey, we'll see eh?

I'm going to have a big, pinchy, strong cup of tea. ;)

Not last year there wasn't, Modric was staying end of.:)
Because the offer wasn't high enough: 1 trillion dollars (in the style of Dr Evil) would have probably swung it!
I think there is a similar case in point this year - Levy has set a price and I fully expect him to stick to it. If £40m does not materialise or even €40m - then he will stay and be given the option of playing or rotting in the reserves. At that point I would expect a similar response to last year: sulk for a week or two and then get on with playing again - at which point we have a £40m, world class midfielder! (Would save on agents' fees as well!).

Nothing to do with the catestrophic, global economic meltdown then?

Just like the stock exchange, volume of trading has fallen off a cliff, and hence replacing players is much harder for clubs if they sell their prized assets.

Total prem transfer spends have gone from 700 mil in 08-09, to 508 in 2011/12, and will fall even more so this year.

Sky's transfer number says 207 million, but I'm not sure if this is Premier league only, or all of England.

Take out the extravagent spending last year of Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City, and for the rest of the clubs, the total spend fell off a cliff.

This isn't the time for expensive mistakes like Bentley, Rebrov, and Bent. So buying a nailed on success costs an awful lot of money, and every club knows it.

And if you think there is still the same money in football, because the TV money offsetts the revenue falls in other area's, go speak to anyone from the blue half of glasgow......

Fair enough point about the financial collapse, but a 5m transfer fee, and 5m signing on fee for Adebayor, is hardly a drop in the ocean. I'm not saying we need to piss money like it's going out fashion. But it's clear (even inside ITK backs this up) that we are dragging our heels when it comes to transfers.

I'd be happy enough for us to sign Adebayor and another striker who could come in for him if he's injured or in the African Cup of Nations.

Anyone better would be an unexpected bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Stoof I have been watching your defense of Levy these past few days with approval and admiration. I even got involved on your side in the only way I can be useful, with economics. Didn't matter.

They need to hate him now. Just the way it is. They will see their error in some amount of time. That I am sure of. But they will never admit it retrospect.

So the one reason I am responding to this, other than the genuine praise, is that I do think there is a middle ground where we should be looking at other strikers.
Rondon went for €10
de Jong went for €12
Mandzukic went for €13
Das Bost went for €9
Joselu for €6
Ola John €9
Castagninos €6

All of those were linked, whether by rumor or good source. They are all good strikers and they all went for fees that we typically find appealing. I wouldn't go to the level of saying I know they would be a good fit for us or the league. In fact, we know we looked at one and said no. But at some point, we have to be realistic about these crazier rumors and start thinking along these level of available, young and potential-laden forwards (Joselu would have been worth 4.5m even if we got Llorente AND Falcao). And it does worry me a bit that we don't seem to be chasing these types as well as Falcao, Llorente, Adebayor and Leandro. I'm worried that our search for a striker is currently black and white and needs to be very very gray.

Edit: and Cisse. We should have listened to Carr in 08 when he told us to get him :D

Funnily enough would have been a waste of 10 million last year the way we played. Might well have been a good one to buy under this new system. But, these things happen

The thing is, and what perhaps people are missing is 95% of the posts shitting it about our lack of transfer activity aren't looking to blame Levy or AVB or people at spurs... We're just shitting it because for whatever the reason and whoever it is to blame we have no strikers, no modric replacement, no players specifically bought to fit avbs new system, no cover on the wings.

Nah, waste of energy. We'll just be going round in circles. You're like a solitary fireman in a burning village attempting to quell the raging inferno with a small bucket of water.

:ROFLMAO:

Apart from the village isn't going to be set on fire for another 3 weeks, if at all. And also the fireman is actually hosing down the rowdy villagers who have gathered with their pitchforks and flaming torches outside Daniel Levy's house. Burn the witch!

So Levy's burning bridges then.

We shouldn't need to deal with City ever again once Ade comes in. They aren't easy to deal with either. Saying that, wasn't it Sir Alex who once famously said, "You know Daniel Levy... he's different."

Mr. Levy certainly does not plant people on these boards for PR reasons! He is a wonderful, intelligent, handsome man who is completely honest and wouldn't do such a devious thing.

Don't believe this slander.

p.s. Everything's fine. Don't worry.

Yep. I think the operative word here is 'seem'. Of course, the club is not obliged to tell us, or consult with us as to who they want. Not everything is broadcast or leaked. And that's the way sensible transfer business should be run, imho. The more we don't know what is happening, in a bizarre way the happier I am!

Of course everyone would be delighted with one of Leandro, Hulk, Falcao etc, but they're unlikely to join unfortunately.

I think most fans would be pleased to have one of the other strikers. Well I know I would!

The Corluka stuff, for example.

We signed him and then they claimed the person who authorised the transfer hadn't executed so under a power of attorney. Ridiculous dealings.

So we won't be selling them Bale then......
