You think that was bad, I remember relegation in '76-'77, then playing in the Second Division '77-'78. Fortunately we bounced straight back up but still, it was really bad!

I'm old too!
I've heard from a few of you guys that the season in the 2nd Division wasn't too bad because we went around trouncing everyone. Still, I guess you'd rather not be there in the first place.

I don’t think drawing to Mansfield Town home and away is trouncing teams, it was a case of leading the pack for a long time and the praying for a miracle on the last day of the season after many slip ups.

Fair enough, I probably assumed we spanked teams. I have seen people suggesting it was fun though. Maybe weight off the shoulders after battling relegation the season before?

Probably for the best I stop side tracking the thread with my youthfulness ? will leave it there

Not a prob. The stuff of nightmares - losing to a +90th minute at Bolton (promotion rivals) with a young Peter Reid scoring for them. Some things stick in the memory

Ah but luckily for us that did live through Spurs in the 90's, the 90's were also great for drugs and raving, so most of us can't remember much of it! ?
Ah but what about those who remember the 90s because we were too young to go to raves? We're the truly scarred ones!

Exactly that. It was good to see the team playing well and, if I remember correctly we brought some younger players through and played well. But, as you said I'd rather us not having been relegated in the first place!

Lol, I would like to have seen them play obviously. Footage of White, Mackay and Greaves is very hard to come by on YouTube etc. Most of the time if I want to know more about players from that era, I usually just ask some of the older members on this forum ?
I'm just jealous because I liked being that age
And all the old bastards at that time most definitely lied about what was to come ?

I actually watched the 9-0 highlights on Wednesday.

If VAR was about I reckon we would have got a penalty in the second half but the last goal scored by Hoddle would have been chalked off for being offside. So prob 9-0 then LOL

It was worse than you think…….this period of utter mediocrity punctuated with a relegation fight coincided with the the goons taking off under Wenger and the Zola/Gullit period for Chelsea.

What a miserable time to be alive :(
And WH used to beat us regularly..
And even Everton beat us comfortably.

And Newcastle thrashed us 7-1.

We were such a weird team in that period capable of thrashing Southampton 7-2 but getting beat by division 2 Bolton 6-1.

Every single game other than vs United, Chelsea or Arsenal was a complete toss up to what Tottenham would turn up.

I think that's why I loved the Jol era so much. The first time in my life I actually saw a quite competent team with an actual identity.

One positive that came from the struggle to get out of Div 2 was that the club recognised that it needed significant reinforcements if it was going to survive back in the top tier, hence the ground-breaking recruitment of Ardiles and Villa.

I still reckon that’s more interesting than our constant average crap of the 90s. There was one year we were quite close to going down (94, we beat Oldham in May to be safe and ended up 3 points above the drop). I remember 94-5 fondly, so looked it up and we finished 11 points off the uefa cup places in 7th, with 62 points from 42 games. That was a high point!
That Oldham game in May was memorable. All the hard core away crew at that game. Me and my mate went up by train with no possibility of getting back that night. Luckily got fixed up with a lift back with one of The British Queen guys. Great atmosphere at the game when we knew we were safe.
That was the second rearranged game for that fixture. For the original date went with the Ross’s coach and heard game was called off when we were at Watford Gap. The first rearranged game was midweek. I was up in Lancashire for work. No way I could get there by public transport. I paid 60 quid for a taxi there (and back -the driver was an old school friend ) only for the game to be postponed because of a waterlogged pitch just as I arrived at the ground. Oh those were the days!

Sadly, 4.8 or 5.0, theyve won trophies and we have not in the past 10 years.
Agreed sadly. I’m surprised we don’t have a higher average relative league position than this though? I wonder what it looks like with average points? (He says too lazy to work it out)

Cooper in goal
Back four: Mick Mills, Russel Osman, Terry Butcher, George Burley
Midfield: Muhren, Thjisen, Johnny Wark and Eric Gates
Attack: Paul Mariner and Alan Brazil

formidable side who should have won the league (who does that remind you of?)
Fantastic side. Remember them getting off the bus outside new West Stand in 82. Always had a place in my heart for Ipswich since.

We moved up to Suffolk a few years ago and Ipswich are the epitome of a sleeping giant. More fans than the likes of Leicester, Fulham, Burnley etc. They are slowly getting it right.

Whisper it quietly but their new manager McKenna is worth keeping an eye on. Came through our youth system for many years.
