I also think he got lucky. Don't forget his first choice was Van Gaal. When that didn't happen he went for the opposite in poch. Neither could have imagined the rise of Kane and Dier ect.

Well, though I would rather stick a hot needle in my eye than have LVG as our manager, he's not doing all that badly at United, so it's not as if wanting him is/was some ridiculous thing. Man U are above us- so whatever you (and I) think of Van Gaal, that's looking like a sound acquisition for them- suggesting it might also have been for us. Again: no, I wouldn't want him here in any way, shape or form-- but at the same time I don't view Levy's having wanted him as foolish.

As for Poch: yeah, sure, he's opposite to LVG, but what was Levy supposed to do? It's not like there are thousands of appropriate choices to lead our club. LVG turned us down (thank God), so he signed Poch. Which was a good thing, right? Perhaps you're saying that it was helter skelter of Levy to want to hire two seemingly opposite types- but in all likelihood, Levy had a (very) short list of possible managers, all of whom had their strongpoints, and all of whom achieved success in their careers- just in very different ways. I don't think his seeing both LVG and Poch as appropriate to lead our club is all that strange tbh...

As for Dier and Kane: well, Kane is a player that came through our academy during Levy's time- an academy that he (Levy) has worked to strengthen and improve tremendously- and Eric Dier was a brilliant acquisition pulled off by a scouting team put together by- you guessed it- Daniel Levy.

It would be one thing if those players were already here when he got here, but seeing as he was directly and/or indirectly responsible for both of them wearing Lily White, he ought to get credit for them, rather than some kind of notion that he "got lucky."

As frustrating as Levy can be, we are clearly on the rise- and that's in no small measure due to him.

This is one of those threads that pops up when we are doing well. If Kane gets injured next game and we don't win in the next 5 or 6 after that then there will be the return of the crowd calling for his head for not buying a backup striker. Fans are fickle.

Exactly. Well, sort of exactly……I doubt it'll be the same person starting the thread. But yeah, the BSoDL are on the rise……..good for them. Good for everyone actually…..

Some people will thank Levy for anything and everything, including their christmas presents, some will blame him for whatever they can, its the same old story………. All this is going to become is another Levy love-in/Levy's a **** thread and the same people will trot out the same party lines and have the same arguments, its something I try not to get involved in much any more, it never really goes anywhere.

Thank you Daniel for appointing Poch and seemingly getting it 'right'……..

at about the tenth attempt :woot:

Kind of agree with this, LVG would have been an absolute unmitigated disaster for us but I could understand the thinking behind it at the time, we needed a mentality change and a few of the players lacked discipline however the football would have been unbearable and him and Levy would have clashed many times in which he probably would have walked.

You only have to see what Utd fans think of him, they can't wait till the day he leaves that club despite them bring near the top of the table which speaks volumes.

I just thought I'd check in, before someone says 'As Mullers posted in here yet?'.
This is a Levy batty wash congratulatory thread, so for that reason...

I think we all need to calm down a bit.

I'm a levy fan but we ain't won anything yet.

Long season ahead.

Agree completely. We have been here before lads. All it will take is for us to lose the next two and we are back to talking about his negligence in the last window.

This squad can win trophies and if it does I will be free and easy with my praise.

I just wrote this on another thread:
Managers, as a rule, take a longer-term view of player trading than fans. The latter want to see transfers in Janary that are related to the current season's weaknesses and eventual finishing position. A good manager focuses on building a squad over a period of years.

Ehmm.. most managers take a completely different view. They want success now at all costs or they know they'll be out on the dole in a few weeks time...

Poch does seem to take a different approach. But he still really wanted Berahino, and Danny managed to stuff up that deal. So there is still every risk of Levy hampering our progress by being Levy...

I don't think that bit is right. Van Gaal was a natural first choice because of his CV, which appealed to all of Levy's worst tendencies as a recruiter - but as soon as he became unavailable, I would think that Levy's thoughts, which must already have been bubbling away to the tune of "perhaps we should try a different approach this time", turned to the rumbles coming from our youth system, as well as the financial implications of the NDP, and opted to appoint a coach who could make proper use of our exciting young players and accelerate their careers.

I don't for a moment think that we "got lucky" with this collection of talented and capable young footballers. They were already talented when our improved academy scouted them, then they were brought up to a basic Premiership standard by our improved youth coaches, but then they became as good as they are partly as a result of working with Pochettino. He didn't just stumble in at the right moment, he has helped to make these players what they are becoming. I don't think for a minute that any of them would be in the England squad, or even playing in the first eleven, if we had appointed a different manager. He's made them into better, more mature players.

LVG has always been good at promoting youth. He would probably be a better fit with us than he is at United, with their post-Ferguson semi-Galactico transfer policy.

John McDermott, Franco Baldini and Mauricio Pochettino deserve plaudits here. But yes, Daniel also for managing to stick with something for 18 months.
