I think the business we did to date was great and the team is much better positioned for success this year. The idea that there was a one window solution to win the league is kind of crazy to me. I am super optimistic that Conte appears to be happy and that we are looking at this with some degree of patience and getting the right players rather than any player.

For those that are disappointed, I don't think it has as much to do with when we did our business - it has more to do with the club allowing expectations to run, and then supporters going too far.

Obviously we did very good business early - and in line with the Manager's expectations that the players be in for pre-season. And, if the club had indicated they were done at that point - i.e. managed expectations - I think most people would be less disappointed today. Instead, it appeared that we continued to look to strengthen the squad, but were not able to get any deals done - for a variety of reasons. That is why some feel disappointed - there was an expectation of more, but nothing materialized.

It’s probably worth looking at this window in the context of where we were less than a year ago with Nuno and remembering the despair and lack of direction and hope. We still have a lot of room to improve but we’ve already come a long way and with the signings we’ve made so far under Conte last year seems like a lifetime ago.

If it makes anyone feel better, it looks like Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool fans are all frustrated/disappointed with the way their windows have ended. As football fans (especially Spurs fans), we should know that disappointment is second nature.

How does the club set expectations? They are generally silent on transfer business. Do you mean media, the Twitter sphere, message boards and our own desires?

I dont think any one team with exception of Man City, are happy with their squads and the transfers this summer. Every team has their weakness and dont think theyre all resolved with this transfer window... againw ith perhaps the exception of Man City.

I've never understood why not signing anyone on deadline day is seen as a failure and something to meltdown about. Much rather we're organised and not scrabbling around last minute.
Exactly.

Signing players on deadline day normally means you are desperate, haven't prepared very well or have dragged a signing out meaning that player has missed an important preseason with the coach and squad.

Thankfully, all our new buys have had a preseason.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Ha ha yeah it does feel like some fans don't think that we deserve to be optimistic about the club.

Fkinel how many more times...
We are not pissed because it's deadline fucking day, we're pissed because after deadline day we can't bring in the extra players we think we need that would elevate us more.
We are not sitting here waiting to sign someone on deadline fucking day, we're not that sad.
Anyway it's done now.... happy are you.
I will support Tottenham know matter what.
I was around when we got relegated, just a kid but remember, and went to every game in div 2 with my dad.
Nothing... nothing nothing will stop me loving or supporting spurs

But I want to see us win the fucking league before I fucking die....is that ok???????

Also, it's not like it was 10 years ago.

Van Der Vaart could come in and smash it immediately.

Today, players need to understand the system, their role in it and need that fitness regime to really settle.

Or is it just managers who dont trust and are riggid and stubborn dont give them a go etc..

Remember Poch.. his tactics were pretty simple tbh yet he still needed 6 months to onboard new signings LOL

We've just had 2 players come straight into the first team and hit the ground running in Bentancur and Kulusevski.
Perisic the same.
Haaland has done ok.
If they're good enough they dont need any time.

No - if we were done, of if they thought we were done, with business, I think Paratici or Conte make a statement to that effect - typical PR fluff "We are happy with the squad and not looking to bring anyone else in, but if the right opportunity arises, we would look at it" type of statement. I think Conte was close to this a couple of times, but many supporters had already set their expectations at 1-2 new starting players.

Its seems pretty obvious we were continuing to actively look at certain positions - RW, and probably CB. And, so that creates the "disappointment", if you will, for people expecting an upgrade, and ultimately getting nothing. Its not the end of the world, supporters will eventually move on to the next thing.

(I am not one of those people who are disappointed, just pointing out how the club could have managed expectations better)

That's true but that's largely because these players are intelligent and Conte knows their game.

Think if we had a chance of Bastoni and Zaniolo today we'd have done it. But we have been tracking them a long time.

Not sure why you brought up Haaland though? He wasn't a last minute buy.

Mostly talking about late signings where their doesn't appear to be any previous interest. Opportunistic ones.
