Conte is gonna be in a lot of trouble for what he’s saying now:

“I want to see VAR be as brave at a bigger club”. “I don’t see honesty in this type of situation”.

That’s gonna go down well at UEFA… not! Probably isn’t going to help us at Stade Velodrome either.

It's an obscure rule, but seemingly the law of the game.
Kane is in an offside position (by half a CM) when Emerson heads the ball, slightly backwards. It deflects off the defender, unintentionally, falls to Kane (who was .5 cm offside when Emerson made the header), therefore considered not a goal.
I think the bigger issue here, is why it took nearly 4 mins. If the rule is meant to be obvious, it should have been sussed out in 90 seconds at best. Even the judgement to decide if Kane was offside based on semi-automated lines, is slightly subjective. Therefore, in my mind, if it reaches a point where you are slightly guessing, you stay with the call on the field.
That's what pisses me off the most about the decision.
Originally, I thought it was BS. But now that the rule has been explained, I get it. But, again... the time to make the call, and the line drawn, and the final decision (which borders on subjective), was what baffled and angered everyone.
This is where VAR is ruining the game. At any point it seems like they are guessing on something that is a matter of milometers, and it takes over 3 mins to do so, you stick with the call on the field. Simple.

First half we were atrocious.

Second half we were much better. And certainly deserved at least a point. We had four great opportunities. All messed up.

The players are already lacking confidence. This ain't gonna help.

Lastly... Gil did himself proud. Did more in 25 mins, than Moura and did the entire time he was on the field. He was busy and trying to make things happen.
Thanks. So the ball direction wasn't the issue, the issue is that Kane is a minuscule in front of emerson when emerson played the ball.

This is all good and true.

Shame they forgot to watch the angle where the Sporting defender shoves Kane into the offside position as Emerson heads the ball…

The lines only draw what the tech can show. The human in VAR should have seen that Kane was only offside because he was shoved there by an opponent.
Just re-watched - the "shove" to the extent there is one, is actually after Royal heads the ball, and, it would never be given as a foul - thus not relevant to a off-side review.

I don't feel quite as bad about our prospects after that second half. It was a bit messy, but we showed a lot more energy and intensity than we have done recently. Marseille will be very difficult though and I am sure that they will really fancy beating us to qualify. One last push for the last 16.

Tell me you're a spurs fan without telling me your a spurs fan.
Just want to get the donkey off our back having not won a trophy for so long. Anyway of course I’ll be happy if we progress to the last 16, but not the end of the world or season if we drop Into Europa either.

Millimetres of offside shouldn't be decided by VAR and/or lines drawn on screen of pixels that covers over inches on the actual grass. The sooner they abolish and amend this rule the better. I bet we will be another use case scenario for them their study and amend, again. Sighz....

I'm hoping the fact Marseille have to actually make a game of it next week they push up and we have the space in behind to exploit them.

I've literally just found out Conte got sent off. How have I missed that!? What else can go wrong?

How many more games this season have we got to watch first halves like that? That first 45 minutes was a fucking disgrace. Better in the second half but the players must have had a hell of a bollocking at half time, and rightly so.
We were flat at the end under Poch, flat under Jose, flat under Nuno, and now flat under Conte. Can it be all four of those managers at fault and the reason we are passing sideways and backwards with no intensity to push forward? I've been saying it since the early Jose days. The players subconsciously don't trust the back line and it's why we drop deeper and deeper, and are scared of losing the ball. It's why they won't risk passing forward until we've nothing to lose.

I just dislike the mockery yet again by other fans that would be saying we are supposedly getting the easiest group and still falter blah blah blah... Which is true TBH and I couldn't even take that myself if that happened.

I would agree if the biggest problem with offsides without VAR is that they’re missed. I’ve rarely been super upset with a goal that was allowed even though it was a few cm offside.

What’s worse though is you’d have the inevitable goals which are incorrectly disallowed due to a non-existing offisde. That’s just a straight up robbery, cheating. At least VAR gets rid of those.

Not sure that’s a bigger problem overall than the kind of farse we saw today though. The offside rule was obviously not created to ensure that the attacker’s nostril hairs aren’t in front of the ball at the time of the pass.
I think the actual criteria for the rule should be changed. A) It should be based on where the player's foot is planted. Not their chuffing shoulder or bum. B) If determined by the foot, then, they should decide upon a actual length that should be considered as offside. EG: A player's whole foot needs to be ahead of the last defender's foot, for it to be deemed offside. And if it is too close to call, you stay with the call on the field.

The lines, and all that crap, with a mm or cm, etc, is absolutely destroying the game. It's laughable as well, because of how easily fixable it would be.

I don’t care if an algorithm draws Kane’s line a millimetre or two nearer to the goal than it draws the ball’s line.
For a hundred years that goal would have stood and watching back the replay every human allows it.
The law used to be if you’re level, you are on side. That didn’t mean level in an absolute sense, down to the Planck length, it meant level according to the considered judgment of human observers.
I say that the goal was legal according to human standards and that we have become enslaved to technology to the ruination of the game.
I personally sat unmoved as Kane scored and my son danced around the room in ecstatic delight, as I now do every time we score. The game is changed and my heart is no longer in it. I am sad.
