Still away and didn't see the game but assuming from the match thread that Lewis will be MOTM with honourable mentions for Carroll and Defoe.

Holtby MotM indeed for me, followed ever so closely by Carroll. They linked up beautifully and having Sandro anchor behind them really helped. He had a fantastic game too, really put out lots of fires and was his usual beastly self.

Firstly, loving the votes for Friedel - he must have been so bored.

Obvious MOM was Holtby, great performance - pressing, good tackling, creative spark, ran the channels and scored a beauty. Worth mentioning the klinsmann dive at the end, legend!

Caroll up there as well - so comfortable on the ball, some great little flicks and lobs over the defence (reminded me of xavi/iniesta) and nearly scored.

Although the youth players were the best of the bunch (bar the predator defoe), the opposite were completely useless yesterday so I don't want to read too much into it. I'm very happy for Holtby, finally a glimpse of what he can do

Lewis was wonderful but I've gone for Tom Carroll simply because I really think he came in to his own last night and, although we've seen flashes of excellence from him before, I think this was the first time he's proved beyond doubt over 90 minutes in a senior game that he could well be what we lacked last season - a replacement for Luka Modric.

And that flick to Defoe inside the box just gave me everything.

Although the opposition was pretty pish, you only have to think back to last year when we played similar quality opposition in Europe to realise how far we have come in 12 months.

Where last year we looked disjointed and cumbersome against the shit****s of Europe's nether regions, with people like Hudd plodding around, tonight was all zip, press, move and cohesion in and out of possession. No fucking slackers, no trundlers, no long ball bollocks, just pass, move, give, go and press.

To be honest, I think performance wise you couldn't separate Carroll and Holtby for MOTM, both were superb throughout. I'd have probably gone Carroll, but for no real quantifiable reason, just my gut. The kid just gets better and better and is already showing more desire to drive a game than our recently departed friend. He played about 6 more incisive passes in the final 3rd than Hudd does most seasons.

Holtby too showed why we bought him. Energy, dynamism and a brain in motion, creating one goal with a deft little through ball and hammering home another with his weaker foot. In between he was everywhere, showing exuberant efficiency, tenacity and a little verve.

It's a well hackneyed cliche, and I used it last week for the away leg, about only knocking down what's in front of you, but we didn't just do that. We outclassed what was put in front us, with a very young group.

You don't always enjoy these facile affairs, but I thoroughly enjoyed tonights performance because it was full of good things. Work rate, cohesion, great movement, zippy and witty passing. It only takes one or two to under perform and these type of games can go sour and curdle on you. Last night everyone was buzzing.

My only grumble was playing Kane as a wide forward. He still equipped himself well enough, but it's not his position.

Individual ramblings:

Friedel - Nothing to do, but his groundwork was good.

Walker - Some nice touches, good game.

Kaboul - Good game

Vertonghen - Good game

Naughton - Good game.

Sandro - Busy and ferocious (a little overly at times)

Carroll - Metronomic. Constantly seeking the ball, constantly looking to play an incisive or meaningful pass. Head up constantly and better off the ball now too. Also happier to keep it at his feet under pressure now too.

Townsend - Good game. Constantly involved. Needs to learn not to take as many long shots and look for a through ball more often.

Holtby - A constant livewire throughout. Works hard off the ball, like Carroll always looking to make something happen on it.

Sigurdsson - Good game, unlucky not to score and unlucky not to be passed to a couple oftimes in good positions.

Defoe - Very good game, and his game thrived off Holtby and Carroll's willingness to seek an incisive pass.

Subs - All did ok.
