Should Ledley King leave?

Apparently Barca's bid for Garay has collapsed.

Would be the ideal Ledley replacement from the little I've seen and lot that I've read. Young, but mature for his age defender who seems to have a very big future ahead of him.

Tomáš Ujfaluši is another player who is available on a free transfer. Can play both centre-back and right-back. Less glamorous than Garay, but another cost effective alternative.

If Ledley was to go/retire this summer, we'd be left with Woodgate, Dawson, Kaboul, Gardner and Rocha (excluding 'youth' players). Of those 5, I can see only Woodgate definitely being here next season. Rocha, who I think is worthy of a place in the squad at the very least, will surely not be next year, and Gardner we expect to either sign permanently with Everton or for some anyone else willing to take him. Dawson and Kaboul are the maybes. I think one of these 2 will probably leave, and if that was the case, I'd keep Kaboul. Anyway, that would probably leave us needing two new centre-backs. Of course, I fully expect Ledley to be there next year, so this is all pointless chatter. In fact, if anything, I'm slowly taking my own thread off topic with random suggestions of replacements.

I think I'll keep quiet now

Not only is Ledley King our best player (and best central defender in the world), but he's everyone's favourite player. Most young fans' favourite ever player. He is the modern day Mr Tottenham Hotspur. He should remain our club captain and remain the first name in the starting eleven even if he can only play a handful of games each season for the remaining seasons of his career.

He'll be fit next season though. He's confident, so I'm confident.

I certainly don't think he should be exiled, but I am concerned about the captaincy in particular. It's not right to keep chopping and changing. It's good to have strong characters on the pitch but there should be one captain. Spurs' biggest problem seems to be consistency! This isn't helping.

Woodgate could be a fine choice... although going on his history he could well have his own problems. It may well be that Ramos will bring in a captainly figure in the summer. A captain doesn't necessarily have to be Spurs man and boy.

I also think he needs to be replaced. As someone else said - he cannot be treated as a First XIer. We need two world-class CB's week in, week out. Just think what a burden that would lift if we could play two solid CB's every week, with King coming in (cameo-esque) occasionally to rest someone at the back.

But, he should stay.

I agree and I hope you're right, but I think the club are making plans for life w/o Leds. If the rumors are to be believed, players like Garay, Lucio and Jarque are not replacements for Dawson or Kaboul (who we are going to keep)...

From a defensive and Goalkeeper point of view the players I think the club should keep is Hutton Chimbonda Woodgate King Dawson Bale Gilberto and Robinson (as back up)

Players out
Cerny (won't be missed)
Stalteri (won't be missed)
Rocha (won't be missed)
Gardner (won't be missed)
Y.P.Lee (maybe missed but he will go)
Assou-Ekotto (maybe missed but don't think his heart is in it)
Kaboul (might be missed the most but when the club buy a quality centre back he will be 5th choice - he won't want that and the club won't want that)

That lot cost about 16m - I think we could recoup the majority of that and spend the money on a World class goalkeeper and Wes Brown and we should still be quids in -

Not only do we have depth we also have quality

Then we can concentrate on midfield.....

I'd be tempted to put faith in Kaboul to be honest. Next to an experienced head like Woody he's bound to improve fast. Plus if we get a top class CM who can help protect the defence they won't be so horribly exposed.

Still, all the rumours seem to be pointing solidly towards the Continent, and whether Levy will wear the idea of putting Brown on the same whack as Woody is irrelevant if Ramos doesn't fancy him. I'd say top targets will be Garay, Jarque and Lucio—and as far as Jarque is concerned, Espanyol have been letting in more goals than us lately, so there may be doubts over him and the Ayatollah.

Why Lucio? Have we been linked, or just your best guess?

We're going to spend money on Wes Brown???!!!???!!:eek:mg:
(besides the fact that he is Wes Brown, which is shocking enough, isn't his contract up this summer?)

I suspect that Kaboul will be around for a bit longer, he is younger than Dawson and has all sorts of talent and potential--he just needs the right conditions to flourish, which Juande will surely provide. I think that regardless of whether or not Leds is still here next season, [pauses, says prayer], Dawson is far more likely to leave. He is the odd man out if another CB comes in--particularly one like Lucio, Jarque, Garay...I can't see any of these players coming, though, if Leds is fully fit--players of that quality are not generally going to be happy fighting for first team football.

Thought I'd whack it here rather than start a new thread...

Seems Ledley's half accepted he won't be playing much from now on if he's going out and getting hammered like this on a Wednesday night. Was thrown out of another nightclub last night.

Silly Ledley :-(

Ramos & Alvarez will be furious at our club captain - I expect a big fine. Getting hammered like that really won't help all that swelling on his knees.

Either Ledley really can't hold his liquor, or he's seriously depressed about his knees. It's very sad and not looking good.

I'll put in a bid for Staltieri. Say, £5.00?

He seems a decent cove, and I need a man-servant.

I have no requirement whatsoever for footballing skills, so he'll do just fine.
